Cognitive explanation
- Cognitive process disturbed, faulty information processing. Deficits in working memory (the working memory is involved in a number of cognitive processes such as language comprehension and learning).
- Lincoln et al (2010) compared the schemas of 83 schizophrenics with 33 healthy individuals. Found that sufferers percieved others as not accepting them, while non-sufferers believed that others evaluated them more positively.
- This suggests that negative thoughts are an influence on the development of schizophrenic symptoms.
Implications/critisisms: Can’t establish cause-effect relationship. Beck (2009) acknowledged that high dopamine levels were a factor as well as dysfuntional schemas. Schizophrenic participants heavily outweighed healthy ones.
