How come people judge countries by their current status but fail to look backwards in time and see how recently it was different?

Then obviously, the number of people in a society determines how powerful it is possible for that society to be. A country with 100 million people can obviously out produce a country with 1 million people. Then people just assume "oh the future will be between China and the United States." It probably won’t, and that’s obvious if you look at population data.
