Are there any online forums left that aren't reddit, discord crap or niche edgy shit? I've been looking for about a month
now and there's nothing. I'm looking for general forums, gaming/life/art/music/anything...

"General" forums are hard to come by. But there are plenty of forums still around dedicated to specific topics. They aren't always particularly active, and a lot of the ones that are active are frequented by small, tight-knit groups of friends who have been on the forum together for decades, which makes it a little challenging to integrate yourself. Just google a thing and the word "forum" and you'll probably find something.

I should add that many of these forums, while dedicated to a specific topic, also have off-topic sections where more general discussions can take place.

But yeah good luck finding a general forum. You'll find some imageboards and chans, but little else. Unfortunately. Some niche forums have "general" / "chat" subsections but that's about it. Everyone is using Reddit or Facebook or X or Bluesky or whatever other gay app or walled garden.

Yeah. Did that once. Tried getting in some groups but after a while it was boring half of things people talked didnt feel engaging. Plus the tight knit pre established clique doesnt help either so I gave up on that.
Online communities are garbage for those where not there from the start unfortunately.

A general normal forum? Good luck. Several of my boards collapsed. I see niche forums for gaming, history, and science.
Try Lemmy, Kibn, Saidit.net, stack exchange, maybe even city-data?

I miss the free ranging forums where anything goes. You could have a car repair discussion in one thread and bullshit about nonsense on another while discussing some scifi book on a third.

I could never find it again but I remember googling something about economic development of emerging markets and somehow I ended up on some forum of white guys who go to Africa to hunt game complaining that it’s too socialist but eventually Africa will become capitalist like America.
It really opened my eyes to something. I’m not sure what it opened my eyes to, but it was definitely something.

Also okay, hunting is one thing, right. Who flies to another continent to hunt? Who’s doing that, and how do they have a community? And why Africa? What demographic is that?

God shut the fuck up bro. You hijack every fucking thread with this unfunny troll attempt and it’s nothing but boring info dump about Africa or china or India. Just relentless politic slop.
almost prefer the “I fed a baby” poster from way back. Hell even the “raping nigguhs” was mildly more amusing the shit you write.

I think that, for better or worse, most people on the internet have embraced the likes of Reddit and X over smaller niche forums. From what I've seen as well, niche forums are slowly dying off. I think the slow death of the wild west era of the internet is pretty sad, but it's what people have embraced.
My best advice, even though you seem like you've already tried this to an extent, would be to look for hobbyist forums. I'm aware of at least one Warhammer forum, Dakka Dakka, that's still fairly active. I think the best drivers for activity for a fourm is probably some shared interest where people want to exchange information a lot, and being pre-established enough to have not been gobbled up by Reddit yet.

What I’m about to say is controversial. I think it’s because modern internet users have been babied into the idea that coding their own website is too hard and AI is just the next step in that. Oh you have to make it more "accessible." Just write some HTML and make your own forum.

I don't think you necessarily need a lot or any coding knowledge to make a forum, though. In fact, come to think of it, I know there's forum software and hosting services out there that are meant to let people with minimal coding knowledge run a forum.
Also, this process started well before AI became a big thing. I think it's more because, admittedly, the big sites are very user-friendly and have the deep pockets necessary to advertise themselves.

I think you need to actually watch somebody else use a computer to understand. A lot of people aren’t with the whole technology thing.

Or like, without website builders without AI, without any of that stuff. If you just give most people a laptop and tell them to make an app. That’s not going anywhere.

No really, there were forum hosting services back in the day that let people set up and run a forum with zero coding knowledge. They took care of all the coding and the hosting. I had to look it up to put some names to them, but ProBoards is a big one, and still around today. Forumotion and FreeForums.org were others.
Granted, they generally didn't look the best, and you could really tell if someone had set one of these up with minimal effort. But my point here is that coding knowledge wasn't necessarily a barrier if you really wanted to set up a forum.

A lot of younger people are post-literate and image and chat obsessed.
Many forums were as thin as one admin and if you have a persistent maladroit, he can spam or obliterate the forum.

Pretty sure eels ran a business running tinybbs derivative forums for technically and mentally deficient fellows of all kinds

Some of the small forums like the remnants “redboards” are too clubby and play like group therapy at a mental institution. It’s all Tourette’s, schizoid rants, and obsession over a couple of regs. Some of these feuds have run for decades.
