Android was bad, but Gemini seals it. I could never go back.

Android lets you pick your assistant, any app can register with the system if you allow it.

Apple forces you into Siri whether you like it or not.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Google is starting to withhold code and wants to make Android the same closed garden.

Google is buying app source code and it is requiring Android developer verification: Register, submit government ID, and pay a fee.

That's not how any of this works.

Android is open source, there are already android forks if things got bad with android.

AOSP updates are 2x a year now, down from quarterly. They no longer are open for observation. Google is moving features and services into proprietary Google Play.

If things got bad from Google we'd see mobile distro options get to the same point Linux is at.

There's really no critical feature that won't exist on the open source side, because people can port it or remake it.

At worst they have laws or partnerships that keep visa/mastercard off fully open source phones. But that would just push people to use progressive web apps for banking.
