The South did so much wrong. Davis was a shitty president. They had a large black and working white population that had no reason to want to fight for the Confederacy, especially with exemptions from service for slave owners (rich man’s war). The South lacked industrial capacity. It had great tactical generals but none excelled at commanding theaters, which the North did well after 1862.

Tbh there are also places up north that are questionable, especially in the rust belt. Some former industrial cities, the infrastructure looks a little scary, not gonna lie. It’s a miracle these bridges don’t collapse. It makes you wonder a bit. The south is worse though.

Honestly, I think this is a problem that’s not just exclusive to America though. I think it’s a problem in the western world in general. We developed first, but now that means our infrastructure is like a hundred years old. Germany used to be known for quality engineering, you know a few years back they had a bridge collapse in Dresden?This might be a tangent from the confederacy: but we need to get our act together with this infrastructure stuff.
