Topic: What do you guys do to stay motivated every day?

Coffee_and_bloom started this discussion 1 hour ago #135,991

I've been thinking... why do I wake up every day? I still haven't found an answer, and I probably never will.

I think people naturally need a purpose to live, or something like that.

I never really felt that way. I think if you’re not sure what you’re supposed to do, just think about something you really don’t want to do and what you’d rather do instead.

For example, go watch some vlogs of amazon delivery drivers, people living in their cars, gambling addicts, etc. It will become immediately obvious what you want that they don’t have.

For the record, the guy doing the reaction has views I don’t agree with but I don’t remember the name of the channel he’s reacting to, but this for instance. If you have a window into somebody’s life who’s living worse than you, it doesn’t mean you’re any better than them, you’re not, you could just as easily be them, but it sort of makes you realize, oh okay, that’s what I need and now I’m gonna go get what I need so I don’t have to live like that.

I don't bother wasting time and energy looking for motivation. If I need to do something, I simply do it. No motivation is required. When I wake up in the morning and my body aches and I'm tired and I'm hungry and it's humid and blah blah blah, none of that matters. I simply get up grab the weights and start lifting. After a few minutes my body realizes it needs to wake the fuck up and I start feeling a lot better. If you just do it, then you'll feel better when the thing is done.

I tried the opposite too. Like people will say don’t compare yourself to people more successful than you. I tried following the progress of the Starship rocket development because for whatever reason SpaceX has like literally no boundaries so it’s super easy for people to just go in there and take pictures of everything and people do really in depth analysis of it on the internet. The only thing was, I was trying to get some negative motivation but it didn’t really work because after a few weeks I realized that the progress of Starship was actually pretty pathetic, the entire thing is a mess, and they undo everything as fast as they do everything. They’re really just trying to slap the thing together, but they had to do crazy stuff like redo all the pipes for the cryogenic propellant and, I’m not even going to go into all of it, but it’s pretty bad.

And I guess the idea is they’re rapidly prototyping everything, which would be cool if they were rapidly improving, but they’re not. The rate of improvement is much much slower than the rate of prototyping to the point where I have my doubts they’ll ever actually get to Mars.

A part of me wonders if it’s just a scam they’re running and they have no intention of making the rocket ever work so they can keep getting more government funding forever by always having an almost there but not quite there yet prototype.

It kinda makes me think there’s one time Elon Musk said, "You should ideally be subtracting at least just as much as w adding." But if you think about that logically, that’s a net zero or net negative progress…

Do you have creative pursuits? Do you have a wife who wants things and kicks you in the ass? I have a job and family. I have tried side pursuits but I pussied out on investment and commitment with either middling results or “shut it down.” I console myself by realizing how many of the touted entrepreneurs are rich kids who had their risk backstopped. I settled on some cash businesses and a rental property for dweeby middle class accrual.
