I was talking to a friend about Tolkien today, and we went on from talking about Elvish and Dwarven to discussing the creation mythology that he created, and my boss was listening. He then interrupted me and told me that "now is not the time for silly stories" even though I had finished my tasks.
But not 3 days ago he was preaching his fucking religion to me WHEN I HAD SHIT TO DO and coming up with the silliest things*. I find it very funny that he actually considers Islam to be more credible than Tolkien.
* We have free will, but god knows beforehand everything you will do because he knows you and therefore knows which action you will likely take. However, god cannot be wrong about it because god is never wrong. This somehow squares perfectly in his mind and solves the argument of 'free will versus determinism'.

Well, the world of Tolkien is believable. I think he was just tapping into the history of another dimension (or whatever you want to call it).
Islam takes a religion that has already been regurgitated a few times, and tries to make sense of the whole mess. The thing about islam, though, is that we know its prophet existed. Theres no doubt about it. Muslims wouldn't be killing each other over the bastardized teachings of this son-in-laws if he hadn't existed! Thats how long it took to turn to shit. Not even a generation.

it is a very believable creation myth. i would not have known it was created in the 20th century if i was not told.
but he takes his version super seriously and derides all others (derides science as well for that matter, he has denied 9/11 and the moon landings and evolution) even though his own is just as silly a story

Denying moon landings or even 9/11 does not get lumped together with denying evolution. A true skeptic could be forgiven for denying the first two. Only a complete fucking moron denies evolution.

i was just saying some of the things that i remember him denying. also he thinks that quantum physics is laughable. i was trying to describe m theory to him and he thinks that the idea of 11 dimensions is silly 'because we only have three it is really obvious'
i tried to describe that we experience three plus one and the rest are only evident on a subatomic scale but he laughed and said it was silly and would not listen

i find that people in general (not just whackjobs) are pretty unwilling to listen to things about physics... even pretty simple things like relativity, which is where i will usually start so that i can get to the good stuff... but people just don't care.

you can't separate them like that... either way "3+1" or "1+3" is correct, because they both add up to "4", or "spacetime".

True, as addition is commutative 3+1 and 1+3 are the same. So in that case I say the "plus" terminology is misleading. We can only ever observe the 3 physical dimensions as a slice in the ticker tape of time. The 3 are always a subset of the one. I'm sure a real calculus nerd could give you the correct mathematical terminology for expressing such a thing, but I forgot all that shit after college and never looked back. LOL.

Evolution is real. Just look at all the shit that's evolved, duh.
The moon landings were real too, you can still see the lunar lander with a telescope.
And 9/11 was real too, you can still not see the twin towers in New York. They really aren't there. And for all the people who say there never really were any towers -that shits just crazy.
