Topic: Pope threatens SSPX: "Get in line or we'll drop Vatican 3"

Anonymous A started this discussion 4 weeks ago #135,859

I don't know what their response said, it was all in Latin.

Anonymous B joined in and replied with this 4 weeks ago, 16 minutes later[^] [v] #1,442,829

Tbh I never heard of it and I’m Catholic. Apparently they have 2 bishops out of 5,600. I think the outcome is probably going to be predictable. Either they’ll back down or get excommunicated and replaced and everything will continue as usual.

Anonymous B double-posted this 4 weeks ago, 2 minutes later, 18 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,830

They have 733 priests… which seems impressive until you google how many Catholic priests there are and you realize this completely doesn’t matter at all.

> "The founder of the SSPX, Marcel Lefebvre, was a French royalist who was fiercely opposed to communism, decolonization and secularism. Lefebvre was one of a small percentage of bishops who voted against key documents of the second Vatican council. He died in 1991. The sect has been dogged throughout its history by accusations of antisemitism and ties to the extreme right."

Oh wow so these guys are actually going to be very important in the future. Founded in 1970 so probably yet another CIA psyop lol but I'll definitely keep an eye on these guys. Very interesting

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised but just having read up on it all a bit, the second vatican council seems like it was intended to start the process of uniting Christianity around the world. In particular they lifted really old excommunications on members of the Orthodox Church at that time so it's clear there's a desire to unite the religion under one banner which obviously requires reforms. This council in particular is the reason for the schism with the SSPX. Given everything going on in the US and JD vance recently converting to Catholicism in 2019, I would not be shocked at all to see the SSPX become big players in the coming years. Especially if Putin brings the war to EU proper and sentiment starts to turn against any kind of unification with Russian politics or religion. Just keep an eye on them

Idk, between 407,000 priests and 5,600 priests, I don’t think the Catholic Church will have a difficult time replacing the priests.

I mean, in the history of everything, a group of people 100 times smaller than the group they’re fighting against usually doesn’t win. I don’t think it’s particularly important or the end result will be particularly interesting or unexpected. If you have a ratio like that, the outcome is obvious.

Anonymous E double-posted this 3 weeks ago, 8 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,977

And even if JD Vance gets behind it or whatever, most Catholics aren’t American, there are four times as many Catholics as Americans, the pope is physically located in the Vatican which is a sovereign country, maybe I’m wrong, but I really don’t think this is going anywhere.

You're thinking about this the wrong way. Don't you remember the headlines about rumors of JD Vance threatening the pope? I think there's a not insignificant chance the CIA just offs Pope Leo, secretly threatens other leaders in the church, and installs some SSPX figurehead. Some things you just have to wait and see about so we'll see what happens

Anonymous E double-posted this 3 weeks ago, 2 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,981

Also, the thing about the Catholic Church that’s different from Islam is, Iran is Shia, 90% of Muslims are Sunni, the United States. Neither sect of Islam has a single leader. There is no equivalent of the pope in Islam. The Catholic Church is one organization with 1.4 billion followers with one individual person as the leader. If Trump kidnapped or killed the pope, the US would completely lose all of its allies, especially in Europe.

Anonymous E triple-posted this 3 weeks ago, 3 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,982

Even Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini didn’t do that, not because they liked the church but because they were smart enough not to. That’s actually why Mussolini made the church an independent nation state and Hitler signed a treaty granting the church religious freedom in Nazi Germany. If Trump actually used the military against the Catholic Church, that would be the most idiotic decision ever because there are Catholics in his government and in the American military and it’s the largest denomination of Christianity in the United States and Catholics believe that the pope is infallible. That would be so offensive to so many people in the world his life would probably be in danger if he did something like that.

Anonymous E quadruple-posted this 3 weeks ago, 3 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,983

I mean, literally 50% of Christians on the planet are Catholic, most of the Supreme Court is Catholic, JD Vance is Catholic, Trump’s wife is Catholic. He’s surrounded by people who are Catholic. That would be one of the most retarded things he could possibly do.

The US is already losing allies in Europe. Trump has been shitting on them nonstop and they have seen what's happened to Ukraine and are arming themselves. Candace Owens was another one that became Catholic recently. It's a growing movement in the US as the general sentiment across the country is "we need to go back to when things were better". I think there are those within the US that would see the Holy Roman Empire revived if possible. If there's literally anyone who would do something that's "never been done before" it's trump. Besides they could easily make it look like a car crash or something

Catholics believe that the pope is the infallible leader of the one true Christian church founded by Jesus Christ and that he inherits his position directly from the Apostle Peter.

In Matthew 16:18 Jesus said:

"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it."

I literally can’t explain how stupid kidnapping or killing the pope would be. 1.4 billion people follow a religion that states that the pope is prevented from error when speaking by God himself, and you kill that person. You can’t be quantify how offensive that would be to so many people in the world. That would be incredibly dangerous.

Anonymous E double-posted this 3 weeks ago, 2 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,991

That would literally be going directly against what Jesus Christ said in the Bible, and Catholics don’t just believe that Jesus is the son of God, Catholics believe that Jesus is literally God in human form. If you believe that the creator of the universe communicates his will through someone, and you also believe that the creator of the universe is absolute good, and somebody kills that person, then the only conclusion you can come to is whoever did that is absolute evil and against the creator of the universe. Which isn’t a position you want to be in.

Wouldn't it disprove the religion?

If the netherworld can't prevail against it, how can some mortal power?

Either you look the other way to preserve your faith, or you give it up because the keystone belief that gives that church authority has been proven void.

Can you shut up about the CIA? The CIA isn’t magical they can’t just do whatever they want, they have limitations. This is like when 10 year olds say, "oh I’ll use a nuke," "oh I’ll use a black hole that’s invincible!" Other countries have intelligence agencies, it’s not a trump card.

I feel like you don’t understand the concept of basic empathy. You can’t understand why killing a religious leader, the leader of one of the world’s largest religions might be offensive. I understand that some people are autistic so they don’t understand other people’s feelings, but even if you were autistic, I feel like cognitively you should be able to figure that out. But I think part of my problem with you, is you think I’m insulting you when I call you stupid, yet in the past you’ve argued that certain races of people are stupid, but when I call you stupid you think I’m being irrational and insulting you and I should stop. But when you say women are irrational or that blacks have low IQs, you can’t comprehend how that’s bad. So you have no ability to understand fairness. You can’t understand that if you’re offended by something other people probably are too. I just I’ve talked to a lot of people, I’ve never talked to anybody as stupid as you before. You’re really something else in a bad way. I just hope you’re not an adult. That’s all I can really say man.

A good test of empathy would be to check if someone responds to what's been said in a conversation or if their answer is unrelated.

Someone with theory of mind could model a position they don't agree with, and then create and answer that reconciles the contradiction in their mind with this empathized model.

If someone didn't have theory of mind they'd only be able to respond with a preplanned answer for a position they heard and thought about before the interaction. It's this canned answer that would reveal they lacked an empathic function.

That’s a vague question. I interpret Genesis poetically, not literally. In the literal sense, Adam and Eve aren’t individuals, but concepts. Man and woman. If you’re asking if Adam and Eve, if male and female as concepts are equally descended from God, then the only correct answer is yes, because males and females evolved from single celled organisms that originally reproduced asexually. So we both come from the same origin.

I won’t claim I know the reason why male and female exist, but there are some arguments I find compelling about the spread of beneficial genes throughout a population, the best example is disease resistance. If an organism reproduces asexually and only members of the species with a specific mutation can survive it, then you have to wait for every lineage other than the one containing the mutation to go extinct, losing any beneficial genes those individuals had in order for the whole species to become resistant. If you reproduce sexually, beneficial genes can spread through populations much faster.

Because if you think about it, having a child with a woman is really sort of like you sharing your genetic material with her so that her children have some of your DNA instead of just hers. Even animals that can reproduce sexually and asexually usually the females will prefer to reproduce sexually if possible because it has such a genetic advantage.

Just because I think women are irrational, that doesn’t mean I’m gay. I can love an irrational person. Love doesn’t mean you lie to someone and you tell them that they’re equal to you when they’re in fact inferior. Basic logic would tell you this.
