I’m pretty sure after the American civil war one of the arguments against birthright citizenship to establish former slaves as American citizens is they didn’t want Asians to be able to become US citizens, I’m pretty sure they said that openly in congress.

It’s not even that just the confederates were racist against Asians, everyone was. They literally banned all Chinese people from immigrating to the US after the civil war. They didn’t ban immigration, they just banned it for one ethnicity: the Chinese specifically.
