@previous (A)It’s actually really intuitive if you think about it.
Europe has 750 million people (which probably counts Russia but let’s ignore that since it doesn’t make a huge difference in terms of the point I’m making). Europe has the same latitude as Russia, which is the world’s largest country which only has 140 million people, and it also has the same latitude as Canada which only has 40 million people. Europe could colonize Africa historically because it had a larger population than Africa, but this was only possible because of AMOC which gives Europe a much warmer climate than it otherwise should have at that latitude. If that’s disrupted, Europe will be much less agriculturally productive and will only be able to support a population similar in size to Russia or Canada.

Ireland will actually probably not be that badly off because Ireland has a tiny population compared to most European countries (because of the British and their starvation policies). I’d be more concerned about countries like France, Germany, the UK, maybe a bit less so Spain because it’s a bit further south.

Europe’s population has already stopped growing, current population projections don’t consider a possible decline in the habitability of Europe due to climate change. For all of history Europe always had more people than Africa, now they have twice as many. Even without considering the effect of AMOC collapse, if you look at the data, Europe being below replacement with Africa experiencing exponential population growth, if you project out, Africa is going to be way bigger compared to Europe than Europe was compared to Africa in the past. Since Africa has a growing population and cities can grow even when the population doesn’t grows, due to the combinations of people having a lot of children and people moving to the cities, there are some crazy projections that in 2100 Lagos could be twice as big as Tokyo is today. Even if the projections are over estimating, most likely the largest cities in the future will be African.

Africa will also have less damage from sea level rise, because fewer Africans live near the coast, because Africa has a shorter coastline relative to its total surface area because it’s so far south glaciers never carved out Africa.

Just go on Google Maps and zoom in. Are they big settlements? No. But they’re possible because there’s water underneath the Sahara. Most of it gets pumped to existing settlements. The reason why not a lot of people live in the Sahara is because historically it was impossible to live there, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to live there now. Obviously, not a lot of people live in the Sahara, because for thousands of years there was no way to exploit its resources. But it has abundant fresh water, abundant clean energy, and you can produce food there. You could totally create a civilization in the middle of the Sahara with modern technology. There’s no reason why that’s not possible other than funding constraints.

Areas with less efficient agriculture generally support smaller populations. Europe is warmer than it should be given its latitude because of the AMOC, but AMOC collapse doesn’t inherently mean Africa becomes uninhabitable, it doesn’t even mean Europe becomes uninhabitable, it just means it would be more like Canada. People still live in Canada… 750 million people don’t live in Canada.

AMOC stands for Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, it’s a system of ocean currents. In order for water to start flowing in a different direction, that doesn’t inherently require that half the planet is on fire or something. Although there are various theories about how stable the AMOC is. Some researchers found its weakening more rapidly some say it’s barely weakening. It’s not a certainty, just a possibility. The idea isn’t that you need drastic climate change to cause AMOC collapse the idea is that it’s an unstable system to begin with so it’s not that hard to mess it up.
