Update: today is tomorrow. It lost value again.

Wait… it’s only $20 higher than its starting price. On google it says it started at $161, it peaked at $218 and it’s back down to $180.

Wait was my intuition about the American stock market actually correct and it actually doesn’t make sense for a company that’s unprofitable billions of dollars in the hole to be worth trillions? That can’t be possible…

Oh well, too bad you literally can’t short it so I wouldn’t have made money on this.

Oh wait that’s not true you can short it…

Nah I’m not going to.

You see, this is my problem, I’m so rational I never lose money.

My theory is the stock went up because people bought the stock because people thought people would buy the stock because they thought people would buy the stock because they thought people would buy the stock because it’s Elon. But with the intention of selling it when it goes out to cash in on the suckers. But then that made it go up, and so everybody sold, and then it went down.

That’s my theory anyway.

I mean, it’s a pump and dump that is only possible because Elon Musk is so rich they changed the rules for him. Nobody can predict whether a stock will go up or down with 100% accuracy in normal circumstances. Being confident would be stupid. You know why they call them conmen? The con is short for confidence.

Oops! My suicide burn belly flop manure resulted in a rapid unscheduled disassembly. This is a success anyway because of rapid iteration.

This is not a nuclear bomb, I know you can’t tell, but there’s a vaporized starship somewhere in that mushroom cloud.

I hope this mushroom cloud being worth a trillion dollars isn’t a metaphor for something or foreshadowing for something at a societal level.

In America there’s this idea that money is real. So if you have a lot of money, you can make stuff happen.

But then physics says…

Like all of us are completely clear that money is just a system of imaginary points we made up like a video game right? We’re all on the same page here?

The chart is misleading if we set to "lifetime" and that really annoys me. I had the same issue with cryptocurrency charts where they would say "see, it only lost XXX% over the lifetime," but the value hadn't really been set for a couple of days on IPO (or ICO on coins).

So far it’s gone down again today since markets opened after the Juneteenth weekend. The first trade on the NASDAQ was set at $150 for SpaceX, its back down into the $150s today. High 150s, but I wouldn’t be surprised if by the end of the week SpaceX actually drops into the $140s. Nothing is guaranteed, but it seems like the winning streak lasted 3 days.

Handsome Squidward double-posted this 1 month ago, 1 minute later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,336

I get what you’re saying though, it cuts out the first couple of days which it wasn’t doing before… and on the max chart there aren’t enough data points. There’s probably some other website with better charts.

Handsome Squidward triple-posted this 1 month ago, 2 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,338

I kinda felt like this would happen though given SpaceX loses billions of dollars and its revenue is smaller than other companies that are valued at much less. Given the IPO was so large, investors don’t have an infinite amount of money and the stock can only go up if people invest more money into it. Investors probably didn’t run out of hype they probably literally just ran out of money they were willing to dump into it. I predict the same thing will happen to OpenAI and Anthropic. If you IPO at a trillion dollar valuation, you can’t reasonably expect to 10x that, a company can’t have a valuation on the same order of magnitude as the GDP of the United States. That obviously isn’t sustainable because you need Americans to actually put money into it to make it go up. At some point Americans will just run out of money to make it go up.

Handsome Squidward quadruple-posted this 1 month ago, 1 minute later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,339

And this is a rich country, it takes a long time, but we don’t have infinite money. I mean we can print infinite currency, but we don’t have infinite value. I feel like the SpaceX IPO was shady in the first place and they bent the rules for Musk, which should be illegal honestly.

Handsome Squidward quintuple-posted this 1 month ago, 2 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,342

I mean technically SpaceX said their total addressable market was the GDP of the United States, not that their stock price would go up that much, but either way it’s like… 100% of economic activity in America is never going to be just SpaceX, even if they have xAI or whatever, they don’t have majority market share in the first place even in AI, so even if AI was that big it’s not inherently going to be them.

Handsome Squidward sextuple-posted this 1 month ago, 6 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,442,344

Or if you can have a company with a valuation on the same order do magnitude as the US, it should probably be Apple or Google, or Nvidia or something. Something that actually makes billions of dollars in profit.
