It’s interesting when you get to the lightning maneuvers on the Eurasian steppe. Which also is prone to mud and bad weather. There aren’t enough mountains or lakes to allow easy defense or advantage. The real winners were the horsemen because you don’t outrun your supply lines when your transport eats grass.

Mongol horses were semi-feral and ate grasses and roots. Many of the other steppe horses ate this diet and were 500-700 lbs. You’re thinking more of the huge European war horses.
