Ngl, I took a class in college about a year ago where we watched Triumph of the Will. Compared to Trump I found it embarrassing on two levels.

1. It was genuinely less racist and less crude than a lot of right wing media I’ve seen online.

2. It was more intelligent propaganda than anything Trump has said.

There’s this one scene in Triumph of the Will where a bunch of Nazis are standing in a field holding shovels and Adolf Hitler was giving a speech to them where he said he was giving all Germans the right to work. (Really he was just drafting them all into the army). But I thought about it, Trump would never in a million years be smart enough to come up with that type of lie. Or there was another scene where Hitler was speaking to the Hitler youth in a stadium and he said something along the lines of, "Most of all, I want you, the youth of Germany to be peace loving." Complete lie, but he was smart enough to tell an inspiring lie like that. Like it just feels embarrassing how much more stupid Trump’s propaganda is relative to Hitler’s but Americans fall for Trump. It just makes you feel like everybody is stupid and you’re living in a country of morons.

That drum corps is legendary. The modern American ones have no discipline or pride. They’re scrawny, fat, or swollen with steroids. They wear their insecurities openly. Riefenstahl’s film is so aesthetically powerful it helped a go nowhere ideology persist after calamitous military defeat.

You should read some Roger Griffin and educate yourself. Even in the 1930s, writers and politicians said American fascism would take the form of “Americanism,” wrap itself in the flag and cross, and would have business backing to fund a populist movement. This isn’t wrong actually. That’s an accurate description of fascist ideology. The only issue is that the mythical past is called a mythical past, because that’s what it is, mythical, not real. Italy did have a great ancient civilization, but the ancient Romans considered the Germanic peoples to be barbarians, were constantly fighting them off, trying to conquer them, and frequently used captured Germanic warriors as slaves. So the whole WWII Italian / German alliance isn’t really based on anything real that existed before. Germany didn’t even exist as a nation for most of history. Germany wasn’t even a unified state until the late 1800s, Hitler technically wasn’t from Germany, and "aryan" isn’t even a real race. The concept of an Aryan race in Europe was based on ahistorical pseudoscience and misunderstanding of where humanity came and how people migrated. In Mein Kampf Hitler literally wrote that without aryan influence Japan wouldn’t be civilized and they can’t be credited as the creators of their own culture. Ancient Germans never had contact with Japan, that should be obvious to anyone. And of course, Hitler knew he was making all this stuff up out of thin air which is why he had that one quote that Nazis like to cite where he said the Chinese had a better history than the Germans in Mein Kampf to try and pretend Hitler wasn’t racist against Asians (he was very racist against Asians if you actually read everything else in Mein Kampf).

To elaborate on the misunderstanding of where humanity came from, in the 1920s and 1930s people started coming up with the idea that humanity began in Northern Europe either in Scandinavia, and that Europeans were the most racially pure original humans that hadn’t been degenerated by African or Jewish or Asian genetics. Except the truth is that our species, Homo sapiens originated in Africa 300,000 years ago, and there were already other species of humans living in other parts of the world, for example Neanderthals lived in Europe, and Denisovans lived in Asia. Humans left Africa on foot, so we had to cross over the tiny land bridge between Israel and Egypt, which led to a migration choke point. So what happened is a relatively tiny group of people ended up leaving Africa and populating the entire rest of the world and in some cases ended up breeding with other species of hominins. The result of this is that, sub Saharan Africans actually have the most pure Homo sapiens DNA, and all the indigenous populations of humans outside of Africa are more inbred the further you get from Africa. Native Americans have less genetic diversity than Asians, and Asians have less genetic diversity than Europeans. Then Africans have about a million more genetic variants than every other type of person from outside Africa. So modern geneticists generally reject the idea that races are a biological reality because it’s impossible to justify the way that we categorize people based on how they look with their actual genetic differences. There is more genetic variation inside of races than between races and similar phenotypes can be caused by completely different genotypes. For example, there are a lot of genes associated with skin color, if two people have the same skin tone it does not mean they have the same skin tone because they have the same genes. Different combinations of genes can lead to similar things.

Racists will obviously reject this and if you ask them about it, they won’t have a good explanation why other than some dumb subjective argument about "culture" or whatever. But it actually does explain some things. For example, Europeans colonized Africa, and the Americas, how come Africa is still majority black but the Americas aren’t majority indigenous? Genetic diversity is really good for disease resistance. The reason why Africa is still African does actually come down to genetics. Old world diseases killed 90% of the native Americans. If white supremacists succeeded at making the human race homogenous, that would make us much weaker as a species. Genetic diversity is actually very important. That’s why we reproduce sexually instead of asexually. If within a population some subset has a mutation that makes them less likely to die of a particular infection, if we didn’t produce sexually, every lineage that doesn’t have that mutation would have to die out. But because humans reproduce sexually instead, we don’t have to die out in order to spread beneficial genes throughout a population, which is the other thing that’s stupid about social Darwinism, it’s based on a flawed understanding of natural selection. The weak don’t actually have to die so the strong can live, if the strong breed with the weak, that makes the weak stronger, if the strong only breed with the strong, the strong will become weaker because they’ll wind up inbred.

If you look into it, the reason why black people enslaved ironically is because black people had better genetics even though whites told themselves the opposite. When white settlers got to the Americas, they wanted to exploit the resources for their colonial empires. But there was a shortage of labor because most white people were still living in Europe so settlements in the Americas were tiny at first. So they tried enslaving Native Americans. The reason why this didn’t work is two fold. First, Native Americans had the advantage of being Native Americans, they were indigenous to the land so if you kidnapped and enslaved a Native American the rest of the tribe would come back later and rescue them or fight you over it. Second, they would drop dead too often from disease. So that’s why Europeans kidnapped Africans and took them to America, because they weren’t indigenous to the land here, so they didn’t have allies who could rescue them here (although black slaves did successfully revolt in Haiti so that was always still a concern), and because blacks didn’t die nearly as often.

Exactly. The whole point of nostalgia and a storied past is that there are vagaries that allow people to read what they want into it and make it their shared delusion. While not necessarily fascist, though it could be used, it’s the conservatives harkening to some glorious 1950s - ignoring that it wasn’t sustainable, benefited from a post-war boom, and managers worked with labor. Of course the dog whistle is that it was an era of absolute white male dominance.

Hitler’s ideology was operatic sword and sorcery. (We can have our perfect world if we kill all of the orcs and elves.) When it came up during the 1920s it was during that pre-New Age explosion or occultism, mediums, seances, pseudo-historical obsessions with Atlantis and Thule.
