"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," Ruth Madoff tells Safer. "We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said '...I just can't go on anymore.'"
So Ruth and Bernard Madoff took a bunch of pills, some of them Ambien and possibly some Klonopin, Ruth recalls. She did not drink alcohol with them for fear of vomiting. "I took what we had, he took more," says Ruth. It was Christmas Eve, she says, "That added to the whole depression." But the pills didn't work. "We took pills and woke up the next day....It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up," she says.

It's even easier to rip off greedy people. With a lot of these Ponzi schemes, the promised return is suspiciously high. Normal people consider that before sinking their life savings into it.
I do feel a lot of sympathy for the indirect investors who didn't know who/what they were dealing with. For the rest too, but a fair amount of annoyance also.
His credentials certainly made it a lot more believable.

Would it be even easier to rape them? Just sayin, blaming the voicing is never the answer. These people made investments because they thought they were doing something that would help them. If they knew more about investing they wouldn't have went to this guy. They were utilizing the services of someone who misled them and abused their trust. Also don't get so mad, it's the internets.

i agree. its easier to rip off greedy people, just as its easier to rape some chick out walking alone who is wearing a skirt.
What about people who make what they are told are very sound investments? I know someone who lost millions to madoff. He is an old man who just invested his retirement into it. He doesn't come off as greedy. He just listened to his jewish friends.
