"Black" itself is a category invented by Europeans. Before Europeans categorized Africans as black, Africans didn’t racially identify as black, because why would you racially identify as black if everybody you’ve ever seen is black? Even today in places like Nigeria, the government there doesn’t categorize people based on race, they categorize them based off of ethnicity which is more closely tied to language and religion.
