Topic: I hadn’t heard from my brother for a year and a half. I was starting to become concerned.

We’re not super close and probably have a different father. But we check in and talk at least every few months. Suddenly, radio silence. Fishing trip? No response.
I finally get his bitch wife to return my call. Where is he? How is he? Turns out he died of a massive heart attack a year and a half ago. She was too “traumatized” to publish an obituary, contact anyone, and quietly buried him.

Fucked up mate. I am in a very similar situation with my brother, a quick check-in every 3 months or so, so I can imagine this being the case for me as well. Imagine that.

I don't get it either... my folks had grandma cremated with zero service or obituary or anything, tossed all her stuff into a rented dumpster. At least I found out about it a week later instead of a year and a half like OP :/.

Make it a more regular check in. Stuff like this underlines how broken the family unit is. I couldn’t handle big family dynamics but I’m always amazed by Mexican and Italian families that do so much together. A dozen people see Aunt Consuela off at the airport for her one week trip. I’m not being facetious.
