It was fine when the machines killed the middle class but now that they automated pontificating he thinks its a problem.

My only issue with the Catholic Church is it just isn’t quite Catholic enough.

…I really do wonder how Protestants interpret Mt 16:18 tho

"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it."

The name Peter means rock, Jesus said Peter is the rock upon which he will build his church, and Jesus said that the netherworld will not prevail against the church he built on Peter. But somehow Jesus was wrong here?

The church in the Vatican is called St. Peter’s Basilica because it’s the church that’s built where St. Peter stood because St. Peter was the first pope of the Catholic Church, Jesus said that the church he would build upon the rock of Peter would prevail against the netherworld. It just makes too much sense to me.

If the church believes we are all created in the image of god, why didn't they have 1 black pope put of 266?

There were African popes. The Roman Empire included parts of Africa.

Mr. Black Boi double-posted this 2 hours ago, 1 minute later, 25 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,814

Now in terms of the race of those popes, that is unknown because the modern concept of race didn’t exist back then. You can find depictions of them, but they were made hundreds of years after their deaths, none from during their lifetimes.

There are also Catholics in Europe, and Africa, and Asia, and the Americas. The Philippines is mostly Catholic, the DRC is mostly Catholic. It’s not even close to an exclusively white religion.

It has always been run by lightskin europeans. No black or asian person has ever led the church, because it is a racist church.

The Vatican is in Italy, most popes have been Italian.

Picking one nation for most of its popes doesn't sound like equality. They can't even bother with a single token black or asian pope?

More than just the race of the person matters, it also matters the direction that the church wants to go in. Choosing a pope from Africa might seem more progressive at face value, but they would likely end up being a more conservative pope than someone chosen from a country like the US.

Anonymous E joined in and replied with this 1 hour ago, 8 minutes later, 45 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,824

I mean, for example, in the west, people associate race with political ideology. Blacks and Asians are grouped together into the left wing category because they often feel like they have to be because the conservative right in the west often favors the perspective of whites over others. But globally if you look at certain issues like sexuality for example, if you look at the laws of various counties, the countries with less white people ironically are actually more conservative on average. It is true that racism exists in Italy and racism exists in the church and there are racists who are Catholic, it’s impossible to deny that, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that every Catholic is racist or that the Bible is racist or that the Churches overall message is racist.

Anonymous E double-posted this 1 hour ago, 2 minutes later, 47 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,825

And there are some exceptions like for example Taiwan or South Africa that have more progressive values. There is nuance to this.

What a coincidence that 266 times in a row it just wasn't right for a black or east asian.

The thing about that is that the Catholic Church is 2,000 years old and you remain the pope until you die. For most of that time they weren’t living in a connected world.

Mr. Black Boi double-posted this 1 hour ago, 2 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,828

I guess what I’m saying is, I’m not saying that there’s no racial bias at all, but 217 out of 266 popes came from Italy, 81.6% of popes were Italian. Most of the bias is for most of history they were probably just choosing popes out of the people they knew in their immediate circle, which would be mostly Italians because it’s physically located in Italy.

Mr. Black Boi triple-posted this 1 hour ago, 2 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,829

And early on, during the Roman Empire, they did choose popes who weren’t Italian. There were three African popes. They did choose popes who weren’t Italian or European when politically North Africa and Italy were one country and there wasn’t a modern racial concept yet.

I mean, you could say that Nigeria is racist against Asians because Nigeria never had an Asian president and South Korea is racist against Africans because they never had an African president. It’s hard to say it’s wrong because obviously, there are very few Nigerians in South Korea, and there are very few South Koreans in Nigeria, if you went around on the street and asked them questions about each other, they might say some off putting things. But it’s not clear whether or not it’s really the main reason why, if you have a population that’s mostly one group.

Mr. Black Boi quintuple-posted this 1 hour ago, 2 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,831

Like idk, how many Korean billionaires are there in Nigeria? Is it because Nigeria is a racist society and they don’t let Asians be successful so if you’re an Asian in Nigeria you have no chance of being a billionaire, or is it because there are virtually no Asians in Nigeria, therefore the probability that there would be an Asian billionaire in Nigeria is incredibly tiny? It’s like… how can you say for sure?

Mr. Black Boi sextuple-posted this 1 hour ago, 1 minute later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,832

Then one being true doesn’t automatically make the other false.

Mr. Black Boi septuple-posted this 1 hour ago, 8 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,833

Although, one major exception to this is if you have a country that’s genuinely diverse, like the US, and then you have a particular role that’s not very diverse, like the presidency, then it’s pretty cut and dry you can’t really make an argument that it’s not racist.
