Topic: Why doesn’t Samsung hire more software engineers and make an operating system?

Mr. Black Boi started this discussion 5 hours ago #135,176

I’ve always wondered about this. Why doesn’t Samsung just become Apple? They’re so close.

Probably has to do with how corporations form. You get old habits and traditions, the known way... Change scary.

OneUI will keep growing until they've rewritten the kernel itself.

Right now DeX already replaces a desktop.

I feel like if you want to make a new operating system, the way you do it isn’t starting at the top of the stack and work your way down, I’m pretty sure that’s the opposite of how it normally works.

Especially since, how would that work? If you change the top of the stack, then you change the layer underneath, well then your top layer doesn’t work anymore because you just modified the dependencies. That would take an eternity.

I guess it’s a balance. Mark Zuckerberg had no problem changing Facebook to Meta for his "metaverse" idea (which really just seems like a Wii lobby but for VR - complete with the outdated graphics) then he decided not to do that, and do AI and fire everybody and sell smart glasses or whatever because he thought that would be the next iPhone.

I guess it’s not impossible though, I mean, Ubuntu exists. There are a bunch of different Linux operating systems, but they’re all still Linux and have the Linux kernel. So I guess you can start at the top of the stack and work your way down, it just seems like whenever that’s done they never end up working their way all the way down. The macOS terminal is just like Linux, but they’re not using a Linux kernel, they’re a Unix based OS, except their kernel is XNU which stands for not "X is Not Unix." So they were trying really hard to definitely not be Linux, and then everybody just buys MacBooks because it’s almost just like Linux minus the open source ideology.

I think we will see more companies placing some varied bets knowing they’ll write down more. Certain markets are too volatile and competitive advantage too fleeting to bet on a couple product lines or a magical acquisition.

I think I can entertain my own rational, even though I'm not exactly anywhere near scholar level when it comes to business. You want to be the landlord of all things social, so you want a "all things social reality" that you own and can sell.

Very similar to the general approach with AI, where it's "whatever is on your mind" but the problem is, not actually everything that's on your mind.

Both these similar approaches are nice, but under the responsibility of a corporation? Actually very limiting via legality issues.

I guess that makes sense given all the companies owned by Meta are social related. For example when he bought WhatsApp and Instagram. It’s almost like he bought them because he didn’t want competition with Facebook.

That’s the other thing about tech companies though, they don’t invent anything. I found some list of all the companies google bought. Almost all of their products are just things they bought and then they changed the name and pretended they invented it.

Didn't China create HarmonyOS for their phones? It's absolutely something that can be done.

Tbh given the politics involved I’m surprised it took them this long. The US and China have been enemies since the end of World War Two, and both countries have a huge incentive to spy on each other. Given the CCP locked the internet down in China, I’m really surprised they just kept using Android for so long, even after producing our phones and their own phones. You’d think hardware is harder than software.

Anonymous G double-posted this 2 hours ago, 3 minutes later, 3 hours after the original post[^] [v] #1,436,595

And I mean, sure we trade with China and have business relations with them or whatever, but if you listen to an American politician or an American tech CEO, everything we do is to "counter China." Why do we have the Artemis program? "We can’t let China beat us back to the moon." Why are we investing so much money in AI? "We can’t let China win the AI race." Even the military leadership in America is obsessed with the idea of a hypothetical war with China and whether we have enough aircraft carriers to do it. I watched some podcast where Pete Hegseth was talking with Shawn Ryan and he has the most nihilistic take on a war with China, he said something like in our war games we have a perfect track record, we lose every time, but then he said something about Jesus or whatever. I mean, I don’t support China, like at all, but you’ve really gotta wonder why they were using android for so long, that just seems kinda dumb.

They’re even talking about the selective service and trying to make it so men auto register for the draft that doesn’t exist when they turn 18.
