I hate aspects of late stage capitalism. For instance, unbundled toll booths. “Oh you want the service/product you bought 5 years ago? Buy a subscription and then buy enough at a special discount that you save money. No we now have tiers, and you’re thinking of our silver program. Yes it’s the same thing you bought before but we increased the price and call it a new service tier.”

I don’t really like terms like "late stage capitalism" and "postmodernism" because they’re doing the end of history fallacy. There’s this idea that the present is the end of time, so somebody in the past called their present moment modern, (the word modern means present), then somebody was like, "Woah that guy said modern a long time ago I guess we’re postmodern!" And then "late stage capitalism" implies that capitalism has stages and we’re at the end stage, which I don’t really see… I mean, countries go through different stages of development and that’s tangentially related to capitalism, but for example, China developed a lot later than America did, so they developed a lot faster because the world had more advanced technology than when America developed. Yet China has a lot of wealth inequality already like America does. But then if you look at the past, in feudal societies, wealth inequality was arguably as bad or worse depending on how you look at it, I mean aristocrats weren’t going to space, but peasants were almost next to slaves, so you could argue it’s better now from the perspective of the common person or worse now from the perspective of billionaires can send themselves into space. Idk.

But that’s all nitpicking, the term just bugs me.

Although, based on demographics, there is an argument to be made that if you look at birth rates for example, the west and Asia has already gotten there, the world hasn’t yet because the birth rates in Africa are so high it’s actually offsetting the low birth rates everywhere else on the planet, so humanity isn’t in decline from a demographic perspective yet, but sometime between 2080 and 2100 the world population should peak because birth rates are declining even in Africa, they’re just so high to begin with they’re still growing. So there is a "decline" phase the world is entering. "Late stage capitalism" does describe a real thing.

(The world population is growing because of Africa and nothing else - might have something to do with the rise of the far right in Europe and America.)

Tbh it would probably be smart to invest in developing countries (if you can find investments that aren’t scams - which is a pretty big ask but whatever) since they have much greater potential for growth than developed countries in Europe, North America, or East Asia. But instead all the rich people are burning money on AI hype, so what do I know.

Rich countries can’t get a whole lot richer than they already are, it’s really easy for poor counties to get richer, because they just have to implement solutions that have already been tried elsewhere. They don’t have to invent new solutions and spend money on R&D to gain massive improvements in productivity. But most people think that investing in things that are already successful is smarter… most people lose money trying to pick things to invest in.

Now China has some of the lowest birth rates, Africa has some of the highest, people will push different narratives about that, but if you think about how it takes babies time to grow up and become adults, GDP growth lags behind population growth. So if you compare what China is doing to what the west is doing… I’m not going to say it, but if you really think about the difference in the level of intelligence in the strategies here…
