On June 21, at the Homeplus World Cup branch in Seoul’s Mapo District, a customer selected a 4,990-won bag of almonds and approached the checkout counter. In less than a second, a camera attached to a compact terminal—smaller than a tablet—recognized the customer’s face. Upon entering a four-digit PIN, the screen displayed the message, “Yu*yeon, your payment has been completed,” and the amount was charged to a pre-registered credit card. The transaction demonstrated that shoppers can now make purchases without carrying a phone or wallet.
