Imagine if we had high speed rail, maglev trains, subways in every major city…

The auto companies bought and dismantled multiple cities’ public transportation. Property rights and the highway system helped kill it too. Plus, any time someone discusses high speed rail every podunk community demands a stop.

Obviously, I don’t condone this, but it is interesting how the government can never get all the legal work done to build high speed rail but back in the day when they built the highway network they had no issue will bulldozing black neighborhoods across the nation. They say that China can build infrastructure fast because they have a system where the individual doesn’t matter, and we can’t do that in the US. Except the 5th amendment basically says the government can bulldoze your house as long as they pay you and can come up with a reason why that benefits society, and they’ve done it twice before when they built the highways and the railroads. I’m not saying they should do it, I’m just saying, there isn’t a real systematic reason why we can’t just bulldoze half the country to build high speed rail, that isn’t illegal.

It’s also weird they shoved that in the same amendment as prohibiting compelled self incrimination. "You have the right to remain silent… and we can’t bulldoze your house."

Although with the railroads it wasn’t black people so much as native Americans and their land, which is probably illegal since they’re supposed to have more land rights because they were here first, but obviously, they didn’t care about the natives too much back in the 1800s. Again, don’t condone this, just pointing out the government can do stuff when they feel like it.

The highways though affected black people since the natives had already been "dealt with" by then.
