If you’re copying something you have a couple options:
1) Turn the painting or picture around and try to follow line by line.
2) Draw an equal grid on your paper and some tracing paper. Placed the blocked tracing paper over what you’re copying and copy by each box.
3) Imitate the shapes, lines, and negative spaces so you don’t become overwhelmed by the object.
The best resource is Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.
