Topic: My stepdaughter bought an iPhone 16 Pro Max...

Anonymous A started this discussion 3 weeks ago #134,253

Why am I telling you this? Because she grew up in a house equal in value to (excluding land) 3 iPhone 16 Pro Max's. At the time of purchasing, her monthly salary was 15% of an iPhone 16 Pro Max. So she borrowed the money and paid interest.

I found out about this today. There is 23% of an iPhone 16 Pro Max worth of debt to pay back. I have no idea about the interest on the debt. My new currency is an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Everything is compared to an iPhone 16 Pro Max nowadays.

Obviously she is not living in a rich country.

She has an iPhone addition. She threatened to leave her course and get a job when she dropped her second hand iPhone in the ocean. I gave her the money for a replacement second hand iPhone on the proviso that she promised to let us get her an Android should her replacement phone die. Fortunately, it didn't die.

Why am I telling you this? I gotta tell someone.

Thanks for reading.

Like companies that take on debt to buy back their own shares.

One could buy an iPhone 15 Plus from the used market for $400 and avoid payments... still have a big screen, fair camera, and battery that's good for 2 more years. Personal opinion: still a terrible price, but it's way better than financing the internet jellybean delivery unit from the tech overlords.

When a company buys their own shares the market cap doesn't change, so they aren't wasting money.

Market manipulation used to be a crime. Polish it up and call it a stock buyback and it's fine now I guess.

It's not stock manipulation because the loss in value from buying the stock is equal to the gain in value from stock appreciation.

So she is dirt poor and you are rich, and you don't regularly give her money?
