Topic: Ajaokuta Steel Mill and the Dangote Oil Refinery

I’m bored so for some reason I was looking into Nigerian industry on the internet. I think Nigeria has a problem with over ambition.
For example, back in the 1970s, they had this idea to build one steel mill larger than all the other steel mills in Nigeria combined for some reason. And they built most of it but ended up not completely finishing it and not using it. But apparently in 2024, they got the idea maybe China could finish building it.
Then more recently, Nigeria used to have this problem where they’re an oil producer but they couldn’t refine their own oil so they had to ship their oil to Europe and then Europe would refine it and keep most of the profits, so they had this idea to refine their own oil. But what they did is they built the largest oil refinery in Africa which is cool and all but now Nigeria doesn’t quite have energy security because the oil refinery is so large they have to import oil to refine because they don’t have enough oil extraction infrastructure.
It seems like Nigeria has a problem with being over ambitious and trying to build the biggest facility ever instead of gradually industrializing and I’m not sure why exactly. Maybe I’m wrong, but I just noticed this and thought it was interesting.
