Topic: are helium futures on the rise?

boof started this discussion 1 month ago #133,783

I haven't covered helium in some time https://minichan.net/topic/52641 but with the retarded bombing going on at natural gas processors that happen to collect helium, this lovely blimp gas is a timely topic.

They could literally just switch to hydrogen for all balloon related activities but some numpty out there is worried their kid's birthday will turn into a Hindenburg incident. Save the helium for important industrial tasks instead.

Who is that faggot who famously said “oh the humanity?” I don’t like him one bit 😒

good news! I have invented a thinking machine. This one is an actual being, not fucking software. It does use quantum computing modules powered by fusion reactors. Happily, helium is a byproduct!

Doesn’t helium escape off into space because it’s such a light atom and it doesn’t react with anything so it’s never bonded to any heavier elements?

So like once we lose the helium we never get it back, there’s a finite supply of helium on our planet.

Fun fact that not a lot of people know: you actually can create crystals from helium and sodium. But it’s only possible at pressures around 1% of the pressure at the core of Jupiter.

Well if patient, you can wait for more radioactive decay that produces alpha particles, aka helium nuclei.

@previous (boof)
How long does that take?

@previous (GetKirked)
I guess that depends on the radionucleotide and how much bulk of that is around where you can dig a hole.

Well to fill up a balloon with helium from radioactive decay, what would be the most efficient way to do that?

It looks like polonium 210 would be a good choice…

Interestingly it’s fatal if ingested but not if it’s outside the body because the alpha radiation only has a 0.1 mm range in human tissue so it can’t penetrate human skin. Which is why the Russians use it to kill political dissidents.

It also decays mostly by alpha radiation.
