White brain:
"Raping and murdering children is bad but being racist is good so if a racist rapes and murders children then the rape and murder is forgivable and I’m going to get mad at anyone who points out the rape and murder of innocent children."

And if there’s a hell, they’re all going, otherwise, they’re dung beetles. But they’d rather lie that everything is somebody else’s fault because they feel a terrible pain to admit they’re wrong about anything due to a ridiculous weakness.

You forgot about the part where you sit in your mother's basement playing video games and ordering GrubHub, blow your college grant hanging out with your bros and majoring in Chicano studies or political science so you can't get a real job that pays.

So, I actually have a different opinion about the liberal arts. If you have a liberal arts degree, you can actually secure a pretty good job teaching liberal arts at a university where they have a liberal arts requirement for general education credits so no matter what anybody majors in everybody has to take your course so you’re never out of the job.

The same for computer science actually. There’s a shortage of CS professors because too many people are studying CS, but if you look online at a highly ranked public university (public universities have to post the salaries of their employees online), some CS professors actually get paid surprisingly well. There are some making like 200,000 a year teaching.

CS grads have one of the highest unemployment rates among all college programs, and their unemployment rate is higher than HS grads.

Everything in the economy can be reduced down to supply and demand. The majors that pay the most have the highest unemployment because everyone knows they pay well so everyone studies those majors and the supply of graduates exceeds the demand for new hires.

I feel like this way of thinking is sort of bad advice because everything is popular at some point and then everything falls apart at another point.

Really if you look into it, computer science is one of the most popular majors because it’s one of the highest paying majors. But the level of skill required to be a software engineer is higher than people actually realize, so a lot of people graduate from college under qualified. You can’t just get a degree in computer science and expect to get a job, you have to go to a university that’s actually ranked well in computer science, and you have to actually be good at it.

well no, that's not quite the problem -- regardless of popularity, science fields with few exceptional schools of say nursing and dentistry or what have you, simply do not relate to jobs that are evenly spread around a country that can be had with a single degree. that doesn't mean a particular person has to not study what they like, but there should be clear advice that there should be no expectation of working in anything related to it unless they have the inclination, time, stamina, money, talent and so on for higher academic degrees.

Like for example, you can’t go online and see what universities are ranked well in computer science and you can google what courses they offer and compare it to courses offered at colleges that aren’t and you’ll find that there are courses you can take as an undergraduate at some universities that you can’t take at other universities. Especially courses related to machine learning. And if you look at job postings, the specific skills that companies are actually looking for are concentrated at certain universities.

If supply exceeds demand, prices fall.
Tech layoffs mean that you accept a lower salary than you expected or you become the unemployed person. Since people would prefer something over nothing, they accept.

Not necessarily. All software developers aren’t equal to each other. You can’t replace a machine learning expert with a guy who knows SQL. Companies will always pay more for employees who provide the company with more value.

If you actually look at the salaries at top tech companies, they’re still pretty high. If you look at what google software developer salaries are for example, the problem isn’t that once you get hired to a company like that you won’t get paid well, the problem is most people get rejected. Fundamentally, it’s an elitist thing. But most people don’t think of it in those terms.

There’s also the issue of, the average employee at a tech company contributes much more value to the company than what they get paid. For example, the average google employee might get paid $200,000 per year, bit on average they generate $1.6 million for the company per year.
Most CS grads are not going to get one of those limited number of ML spots at top tech firms.
The majority of devs are code monkeys who were hired because they could translate the project goals into a language like SQL. With WYSIWIG tools and vibe coding, most of them are redundant.
Some will be able to find work as a senior doing complicated, interesting work. Most won't.

I’m also just going to say: vibe coding SQL might be one of the worst ideas anybody’s ever had. If you know anything about SQL you should be able to figure out why you shouldn’t vibe code a database.
