You know, the craziest thing about American think tanks is you can literally have a career as a white dude who doesn’t speak Chinese and has never been to china being a "china expert." All you have to do is get up on stage at some university somewhere and say, "China is far ahead of America in AI and will destroy us." You say that one time, you will be quoted in the news for several months to several years after saying it and you will be able to fully financially support yourself being a China AI expert. It doesn’t need to be true and in fact it’s not true, but if you say it people will think you’re a genius for some weird reason.

China is bad though and they do want to kill all of us, but they won’t because they’re Chinese and Chinese people never do anything drastic. It’s a part of their culture, they’ll talk about murdering you for a hundred years and then just never find the time to actually get around to it. It’s fine, Taiwanese people aren’t worried or anything.

People tend to compartmentalize with sex criminals. They often won’t believe someone was a perp even if presented with evidence. Less so still if it’s someone they know, like, and otherwise agree with. We had a HS coach fired and convicted and yet his obituary was glowing - and mine and other comments were scrubbed when we said “except he’s a rapist.”
We also have some Epstein outrage split along party lines. It’s ridiculous. Perverts are perverts and deserved to be dethroned, convicted, and shunned.
Throw in pervasive Victorian notions of criminality that resolve to poverty and obvious ogre-like traits.
