One of the things about Africa that’s kinda weird is the casual explanation for colonization is that Europe was more advanced. Which is easy to believe and makes perfect sense until you start looking into pre-colonial west African states, their governmental structures, and what technologies they had. Because it’s like most people think that Africans were Stone Age tribal people with spears, and that’s why they got colonized and enslaved by Europeans. So then that makes it easy for white supremacists to be like “Africans are just biologically stupid they’re low IQ." But then if you actually look into it, that’s not really the case. Most African Americans came from Nigeria, but Nigerians had writing and governments and laws and they were making weapons and tools from iron before the Europeans got there. Of course, modern Nigeria is dysfunctional, but I just don’t buy the idea that it’s genetic or something. It really seems like they were pretty organized before the Europeans started burning cities…

Honestly, I don’t know what goes so wrong in somebody’s life they get butthurt this easily that they can’t hear somebody say something positive about an entire race of people. But if you ever get to that low in life, I’d really appreciate it if you just gave up. Like nobody has time for your misery and stuff.

It’s a dumb cognitive bias reinforced by selection and other biases. I could look at FLDS and say all Mormons are child trafficking perverts running harems but it wouldn’t be true. You just select the sample that proves your bias.
Better still to create conditions for failure and additional perverse incentives, and then blame the group for their failure.

One more thing: It’s interesting to look beyond the black-white binary for additional patterns of discrimination. Outgroups in the Sahel, for instance, are more determined by linguistic and cultural affiliation than by color.
You have Dominicans who say they’re morenos and despise Haitians. Even more in the Pacific with various groups pushing on each other, such as in Indonesia with various violent feuds. Or how Pakistanis treated Bengalis.

I think the thing with Africa, is it’s a very very diverse continent. So not everyone is on the same page. I think it’s unlikely to see every country in Africa do what you wish they would do, but some of them probably will. It’s just a question of which country does it first and when do others see that and copy it.

I think it will happen, but it will play out over several decades rather than years. Just because of the scale of the problem, development involves various considerations like politics, birth rates, living standards, the economy. I don’t know who will get it right first, but there are so many countries somebody has to.

If I had to guess though, just looking at satellite images of how different places look, if I had to bet on a region, it would probably be east Africa probably will develop before west Africa. But west Africa has more people. I see more railways and factories and paved roads in Kenya as opposed to Nigeria, except for the capital Abuja which is noticeably more developed than the rest of Nigeria.

Abuja and Lagos look like they should be in two different countries honestly. There’s no comparison. Although it’s good it means that Nigerians are perfectly capable of being more like Kenya, it’s just, they need to prioritize places other than the capital city.

Since Nigeria has such a high birth rate and people are urbanizing moving to cities, combined with the fact that Japan has a low birth rate, there are some estimates that by the end of the century Lagos will be larger than Tokyo. Of course, there are slums in Lagos that the government has been demolishing. It’s hard to say what exactly it will look like, 70 years is a long time. It’s poor now, but it might not be 70 years from now.
