Chris is haunted in his dreams by the ghost of a man he killed. The ghost ends up warning Chris about bullets he left inside his head when he killed him. The question is asked but not answered, why would that guy help you? Maybe it's not helping him avoid the cops but helping him to stay in the life he hates and sins for, the life that makes him suffer and eventually die for. That's the mystical reading.
But maybe without knowing it, he really hates the mobster life, but his psyche knows and accidentally reveals that in his dream, where the dead guy is helping him stay in the very life he hates.
