He claimed to be a prolific serial killer tied into the mob, a top hitter. His stories involved reporting to or interacting with people who were mostly dead.

Turned out he probably killed 5-8 people in his robbery and petty loansharking circle. He was paid for the interviews and fed the cash to his ex wife and family.

I feel like 5-8 murders is several too many

Murder isn’t really that bad but some authoritarians want to live under a nanny state that doesn’t let us chose for ourselves who should live and who should die.

I agree. But he exaggerated his crimes, connections, and criminal mastermind veneer through pathological lying and friendly documentarians. He appears in none of the well-researched true crime stories of associated mobsters. He even had a fanciful tale of collaborating with a fellow hitman who operated from an ice cream truck.

I give him props for conning HBO, inserting himself into a pivotal executioner role in 1970s-1980s NYC mob wars, and creating a fake historical legacy for himself. Plus cash for his family. He was an engaging storyteller.
