I speak to him via letter as we are actually ex-alumni and the actual reason is that Russia has blocked western websites for people in sensitive jobs. Because he works for Gazprom, he's considered to be at risk of radicalisation.

He was circumventing these blocks for some time, posting inoffensive and non-controversial things. He stopped visiting entirely because he was visited by a person at his home on Orthodox Christmas Day, who warned him to stop avoiding protection firewalls. He suspects that he is an object of suspicion because he was previously a British citizen.
