I think the option causes a window to pop up asking for confirmation on the shutdown/hibernate/sleep/whatever option whenever the lid is closed, and then only proceeds with the shutdown/hibernate/sleep/whatever if a button is not activated. I would guess this is for people who want to close the laptop while it is connected to an external video source.
