Most assholes who slide, especially serial killers, do so because police are incompetent and fail to share information. This is supported by the mugshots of toothless bed wetting serial killers who couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag.

Some examples: Long Island serial killer was a huge creep in a dilapidated home with weird habits. Police needed only get a geofencing warrant and they could have caught him a decade ago. But the LI police were caught in scandals and didn’t care about dead escorts.
Richard Ramirez was a burglar caught by angry civilians. After the fact the cops realized how easily they could have had them.
Jeffrey Dahmer had a victim escape but the Midwestern cops did nothing because the victim was a gay black man.
Basically the lesson to aspiring serial killers is to off people society disregards and do so across multiple law enforcement jurisdictions.

I sort of get what you mean. I think that the idea of the master criminal who commits perfect, undetectable crimes is largely fictional. And yeah, it's a recurring thing that a lot of these guys get away with it because the police (initially) make mistakes or are incompetent. Or the serial killer himself is an idiot who boasts about his crimes or just makes lots of mistakes.
I still enjoy true crime podcasts, though. You're not supposed to be rooting for the killed, so the chase and them eventually being caught is the good part for me.

You don't know the people who haven't been caught and got away with it. There are some famous attention seekers like Jack the Ripper, Riddle Man or Zodiac but probably many more who just killed and returned to their normal lives.

For example: when the United States boycotted the G20 summit in South Africa over "genocide against White South Africans" nobody else followed the US. You know, there are a lot of people in Asia, I don’t doubt that plenty of Asians that like Whites more than Blacks exist out there. But you do have to admit, if you’re Asian, you would have to be a little bit stupid to look up to White people.
