Hehe… have I told you about this one funny economics joke I heard? It’s super funny.
So basically how it goes is there’s one economist, and he’s walking, and he finds a pile of shit. And then another economist walks up to him, and he’s like, I’ll pay you a hundred dollars if you eat this pile of shit. And then the other economist is like, wait a second, and he was walking his dog, and his dog pooped on the ground, so he said, I’ll pay you $100 dollars if you eat this pile of shit too. Then the first economist goes wait, now we’re both eating shit, and we each gave each other $100 but we each received $100, so we both just ate shit and didn’t make any money. Then the other guy goes, "yeah but that’s $200 into the economy."

It’s interesting how a lot of racism is based on GDP, like oh this country has a low GDP so maybe everybody in that country is just stupid. Except GDP is stupid.

Dumb example because the utility gained from someone watching someone else eat shit is low, the cost of the labor is higher on the worlers than the pay compensates them, so neither side would actually make those deals.
GDP works because people actually make the choices they do, the real world isn't full of nonsensical trades like that.

I feel like GDP is distorted by exchange rates. For example, if you compare the GDP per capita of the United States to Asian countries and then compare living standards, it doesn’t quite add up. For example, compare the GDP per capita of Japan and the US then look at Japan on google street view. Or compare the GDP per capita of the US and China and then look at Shanghai, or Shenzhen, or Beijing on google street view.

Even in Africa, most countries have very low GDP, and people have all these negative opinions about how they’re incompetent and will never develop and blame others or whatever, but then when I look at satellite images, I see a bunch of factories in East Africa.

So that guy shut down F5, rebooted it to reg only, then shut it down again? Did anyone but the dregs migrate there? F2 was so old and busted it didn’t even have SSL. F3 somehow is still hosted but doesn’t allow posting because someone bumped a bunch of old threads and Greg had a tizzy.
> Looks like F5 shuts down tomorrow. The admin is retarded.
He’s a temperamental twat. Funny thing is, why do it at all? Running a free speech forum means playing goalie against hackers and serious perverts at times. I checked out F667bbs and it’s a nightmarish array of OCD bigots and really disgusting porn images.

You know, there were actually cross dressers in the German military during World War Two? You can find pictures on google pretty easily. Nazis being into trans porn goes way back right to the beginning.

If you were correct you could make money on arbitrage.
Everything Japan is miniature, and inside those shiny buildings are people living in tiny apartments who can't afford to do much of anything in their life and work much more than Americans.
Those downtown spots in China are very developed, but are a tiny minority of the country. Most Chinese do not live like that.

Seeing a large building tells you nothing about about what they make, what it sells for, whether employees show up on time and sober, if the infrastructure underground exists or is mainted, etc.

You may be thinking of the early SA, led by macho gay Ernst Rohm.

People should really look into this themselves. Seeing skinny white guys from 1942 dressed up like ugly women with nazi flags in the background really changes your outlook on life, the universe, and everything.

Most people live in cities. The "cities are just a bubble everybody is actually rural" stuff is just cope from hillbillies. That hasn’t been the case since industrialized farming was invented, which was quite some time ago.

Even in Africa, the countryside is getting emptied out. Which is amazing because despite the stereotypes, if you look on google earth, Africans use their land very different from Europe and America. I can say pretty confidently the "poor people have kids because farms" thing doesn’t add up.

The GDP per capita of China is about the same as the world average GDP per capita. They’re not really worse off or better off on average than anybody else is, but everybody has to turn it into something political.

The part I doubt, is the GDP per capita of the US is about 6x higher than the GDP per capita of China, I don’t doubt that I’m richer than the average Chinese person, but what I do doubt is that I’m 6x as productive, or own 6x as much stuff as a Chinese person. I might have spent more money on what I own than what a Chinese person did, but I kinda doubt I literally have 6x as much stuff or produce 6x as much of anything.

I don’t actually know anybody who produces anything that physically exists, but we create more "value," except value is an abstract concept and our money is backed by nothing but belief and trust. It works, but that doesn’t make it real per say.

Really, I’m not saying GDP is bad, or that China isn’t poorer than the west by a big margin per capita, it is just I think exchange rates distort it a bit. Because based on GDP per capita, you’d think the Chinese are living in cardboard boxes or something, and they’re clearly not. Like if you’re an average American, and you found out tomorrow your salary was 6x lower, you’d probably wind up homeless. So obviously there’s more to the story I guess.

Fiat currency is the only universally accepted religion in human history.

A much higher percentage of Chinese than westerners for sure.
GDP per capita works as a metric, but sampling bias makes people think it's a simple quirk of exchange rates.
Commodities normalize in price in global markets, if it was just exchange rates then shipping companies would make billions on the arbitrage until the difference was gone.
