Witch hunts, modern cancel culture, all have similar motives. It starts out, on occasion, targeting bad actors. Then the frenzy creates fake victims claiming possession, sexual assault, political affiliations. There’s a need for ever more witches, until the frenzy consumes anyone who pronounces “witch” oddly or who doesn’t cheer loudly enough at the stake burnings.
