Nevermind that witches (as ordinarily defined) don't even exist. "accusations seem to have had more to do with petty jealousies, land disputes and squabbles between neighbours than anything theological." it could be a tool to get someone's stuff.

Witch hunts, modern cancel culture, all have similar motives. It starts out, on occasion, targeting bad actors. Then the frenzy creates fake victims claiming possession, sexual assault, political affiliations. There’s a need for ever more witches, until the frenzy consumes anyone who pronounces “witch” oddly or who doesn’t cheer loudly enough at the stake burnings.
