no not 911 or seeing a threapist. im talking about the equivalent of the suicide prevention hotline but for homicide because of homicical ideation is a real thing.

Why would somebody who wants to kill people call the government and tell them what they’re about to do?

so they can prevent it with words. if a person calls its because they want to be stop or convinced that its not worth it. same reason id image a suicide prevention operator would do the same thing.

I’m not sure if that would work. People tend to kill people for reasons and I’m not sure if talking about those reasons would make people change their minds.

Most people don’t kill people because it’s illegal. But when they find themselves in situations where it’s not illegal for them to kill people and there’s a permission structure for it, the majority of people are perfectly capable of murder.

like sometimes I wonder if some mass shooting ended up as a result of them crashing out. like the whole "you're one bad day away" adage. yes there are some based on political/religious beliefs but then what about the possiblity that a very mundane and normal thing like losing your job or having an annoying loud neighbor. I wonder how many cases of homicide has occured based on soley on that?

The easiest way to prevent homicide is to take away the means for people to commit it. Countries like Japan, China, and the UK have very few gun deaths. But all those countries still have psychopaths.

I also feel like it’s a bit problematic since attempted murder is a crime. So if someone says that they’re thinking about murdering something, it’s unclear whether or not that could count as a confession.

I guess but going off of that all that means is that some people are pent up with murderous intent but have no means to expel it so they'll stew in it. In a lot of ways maybe the US having many guns is a good thing because it serves as a deterrent. if you know everyone has the means to kill you then you'd think twice(granted its not the case right now as of 2025 but still)

Idk, I’m just not sure it would work. Suicide hotlines work because people want to live on some instinctual level, so even for a depressed person it’s not easy to commit suicide. But for murder, I think a large number of people are very shallow and only consider hurting someone to be a bad thing if they like that person. But I have a feeling that if most people killed somebody they didn’t like, they wouldn’t feel bad about it and would probably get mad at you if you said they did something wrong. But I also think most people simultaneously wouldn’t consider the perspective of a murderer this way and advocate for the most extreme punishment possible. Most people aren’t very deep.

Well, the thing about psychopaths is they don’t experience anxiety in the same way as normal people and they don’t learn from their mistakes. Not all psychopaths are afraid of death, a lot of mass shootings are also suicides. They want to take others with them. You can’t deter a psychopath by having a gun, they don’t care. They aren’t normal people.

a confession would be admitting you actually did something but the closest to that would be conspiracy to homicide or whatever that charge is called. i forgot. because if you said you were thinking about it if you hadnt actually then one should get help.

You do have a point though, if people were rational, guns would be a deterrent. But they’re not. And you have to keep in mind, people usually kill people who they know. Terrorism also exists, but most killings are targeted, and most people who commit targeted killings are smart enough to not give their victim a fighting chance. Why would somebody break into your house and give you a chance to get your gun out and fight back when they could just sneak up behind you and shoot you in the back of the head when you’re not looking?

Being a danger to yourself AND/OR others is grounds for being warded and 911 can be used.

Statistically the “good guy with a gun” is a myth. Gunslinger citizen heroes and vigilantes only exist in movies. If someone stops a mass shooter it’s usually with a tackle.

Most gun owners don’t have tactical training. Shooting at a static target in range conditions is about the same as standing immobile in front of a heavy bag and thinking the punches you’re throwing prepare you for a street fight.

Tbh, it doesn’t work if you are trained either. The only reason guys who come back from the military have experience successfully defending themselves with guns over and over again is because the ones who didn’t aren’t alive to talk about it, so it’s purely survivorship bias.

If you think about it, if you’re going into it, the probability of something happening at least once is 1-(1-p)^n, and you only have to be fatally shot once to wind up dead. So if p is whatever the probability of dying in an encounter with someone else who’s armed and n is the number of times you repeat that, your probability of dying goes up exponentially with every encounter like that you have. So if you were trained and did go into combat, you really shouldn’t necessarily expect that you’re going to be one of the lucky ones who comes back and gets to tell people about how you shot 10 guys. You’re way more likely to be one of the guys that got shot.

If you think about it, the average person’s odds are 50% per encounter. The math doesn’t look good.

1-(1-0.5)^n (odds of death)

We should offer jobs to people who wish they were murderers in slaughterhouses, tagline "want to murder your wife? Murders cows instead, today!"

Idea: homicide sex line.

"Hey big boy? You wanna kill your girlfriend who cheated on you? Oh dear… I bet you want to put your knife all over that big strong man who laid her down in bed don’t you? Yeah you do big boy. You’re such a handsome man. I wish I could feel all over you, I bet you’re so angry your muscles are so rock hard when you’re thrusting that 6 inch blade in and out. I bet you’ll twist it won’t you hehe!"
