One night, dark as a butcher’s hook, feelin’ Barney Rubble, proper knackered,
Gazin’ over me jam jars of old dusty apples and pears—
Nearly dozin’ off, nearly having a kip, when there’s a Jerry Lee Lewis on the door,
Someone tappin’, rappin’, right gentle-like at me drum.
“It’s just some trouble and strife,” I mutters, “knockin’ at me drum—
Nothin’ else, not a sausage.”

Ah, I remembers, I muttered, “It’s me noggin playin’ tricks,
Just a bit o’ wind from the old kettle, that’s all, that’s all.”
But the tappin’ kept on, steady, like a bowler hat on cobbles,
Echoin’ through the ol’ dog and bone—me bedroom walls.
“Right then,” I says, “I’ll have a butcher’s, see who’s at me drum—
Only this, and not a sausage more.”
