Are you still suggesting that a city surrounded by hundreds of thousands of km² of natural resources will have a harder time than a city-state without that advantage?

Singapore is a tiny island city state surrounded by water on all sides. There aren’t that many islands in Africa, it has a completely different geographic reality. It’s a moronic comparison.

If you want to know why Africans didn’t build a bunch of boats and colonize the world like Europeans, look at a map of Africa, count every island, sea, and peninsula you can, compare that to Europe, compare that to Asia, and that’s literally the entire answer. This isn’t a complicated thing that needs to be debated. Anybody with two brain cells can tell there’s a big difference between developing a city of 6 million people and developing a continent of 1,500 million people. Unless your brain fell out that shouldn’t be complicated!

There also are developed cities in Africa, which you completely ignored using baseless insults about how "organized" they are, without any metric or statistic to back that up. You just say stuff based on nothing that are just subjective opinions and then ask questions not expecting an answer like a stubborn idiot!

There are also parts of Asia where you can find slums where people are living in more or less the same condition as you would find in slums in places in Africa like Nigeria.

Even if you really want to stretch "culture" to try and explain Africans having worse economic outcomes than Asians, it doesn’t make any sense, because there are plenty of examples of similarities in cultural norms between African and Asian countries that don’t align with western norms. For example, everybody knows about the "Chinese people eat dogs" stereotype. Did you know that’s also a thing in Nigeria? In Cambodia, they eat spiders. This whole thing is just moronic.

There are plenty of places in Asia worse than Singapore, cherry-picking one city out of the continent that has 60% of the population of Earth and being like "Why doesn’t every place in Africa look like an island city state in the middle of the ocean" is the dumbest thing ever.

It’s like, oh, I don’t know, maybe Nigeria doesn’t look like an island city state because Nigeria isn’t an island, and it isn’t a city, and it’s not in the middle of an ocean surrounded by other islands. Like why doesn’t Shenzhen look like Hawaii? There are dumb questions.

Even cities that have larger white populations like Cape Town or Pretoria are still more than 50% black. There aren’t really white majority cities in Africa, that’s not a thing.

If you think about it, the United States is about 13% black, South Africa is 7% white. So white people in South Africa are a smaller minority than black people are in the United States. So the claim that South Africa is somehow a "white country" or was built by white people isn’t really believable because they’re not really a significant portion of the population.

Like okay, look: I can prove to you that those IQ score maps are fake very easily.
Find one of those IQ score by country maps online, and see what IQ it says Africans have on average. Now google what percentile that IQ is. Google will tell you. If you google what percentile a 100 IQ is for example, it will tell you it’s the 50th percentile meaning 50% of the population has an IQ below 100, 50% has an IQ above 100. Now I want you to take that score from that IQ map you found, and I want you to google what percentile it is. Then google what percentage of people on Earth live in Africa.
It’s that simple, it’s not going to work out, because the data is fake.

> I don't think you are inferior. You're obviously very intelligent. It's just a matter of averages across a population.
If people have worse material conditions and are treated worse they tend to have worse outcomes. The logic that you should treat Africans poorly because Africans are less successful just perpetuates that. But the fundamental mistake with that, is that oppressing black people doesn’t actually make white people better off in absolute terms. In an alternate world where Europe never colonized Africa and Africa developed on its own, Europe and Africa would both be richer through mutual gains through trade. Europeans only feel like oppressing Africans has benefited them because you can only see where Europe is relative to Africa, but not where Europe would have been relative to where Europe is.

It’s true for instance, that the majority of the wealth in the world belongs to western countries at this moment in history, and that western countries are the minority in terms of population. So you feel like you have an advantage by being western, you feel like you benefit from that inequality. Except, it’s also true that most of the wealth in the United States belongs to a minority of the population. Except, that’s obfuscated from people. They only want you to punch down so you don’t change the social order to benefit yourself in a meaningful way. If you’re richer than an African, billionaires don’t care, to them you’re basically all the same.

Just curious, do you feel optimistic for the future of the west?
> Question: why did Liberia fail? Genuine question. > > It had protection from European colonialism. It had some funding. It had very optimistic early leaders and community. What happened?
The Americo-Liberian pissed off everyone else as an exploitative minority. Samuel Doe rebelled. Then he was killed and Charles Taylor took sociopathy to a new level. Taylor is underappreciated. He figured out how to run a state that is a pure business with zero public goods provided. No services or security. He flagged vessels for cash and smuggled diamonds. None of this was broadly beneficial but it was innovative.
Pre-chaos Liberia also was a net resources exporter. It had the same economic pitfalls of similarly structured economies.
One also can argue that colonialism never left. Look up the Safari Group. Or how the former colonial powers actually made more money outsourcing governance to the local liberators, who immediately jumped on the existing order and set up kleptocracies.
It took Europe hundreds of years, an age of religious wars, multiple revolutions, and two world wars to get to the current social democracies.

There are African cities with access to the ocean, but Singapore does not have a resource advantage. They can't benefit from sprawling farmlands, mines, and rivers the way many African nations can.
Why do asians crammed onto a small area succeed, while blacks with many resources fail?

If you see a pattern that countries that have little resources wind up rich, while countries that have a lot of resources wind up poor, maybe your intuition about what wealth is and where it comes from is actually wrong. In World War Two, Japanese had an empire, the Japanese industrialized, why? Because they had an incentive to. Japan doesn’t have any oil. How was Japan supposed to get oil when they didn’t have any oil to sell to somebody else who was already industrialized to make money? Their answer was they’d invade Korea, use Korean labor and Korean resources to build ships to invade China and take over Asia, to bring all that oil and all that steel back to Japan, where they could build more ships and fuel them to keep the cycle going. You’re thinking about it backwards.

Think about it this way: when a diverse country is run by white people, it always eventually returns to non-white rule. America was founded with slavery, eventually America had a black president. South Africa was colonized by a white minority, now it’s a black run country essentially. The British colonized India, then they had an Indian PM. It’s like, if you were superior, why would that happen every time? It doesn’t matter how much of an advantage white people have, it always returns to that.

Can a white man become the prime minister of India? If everybody in India is inferior to you, shouldn’t that be the easiest thing in the world? Will Japan ever have a white prime minister? Will South Africa ever have another white president?
Think about that in comparison to countries like Canada, the United States, Britain, Germany. It’s much easier to imagine an Indian or a Japanese person or a black person becoming the leader in those countries.

The British empire doesn’t exist anymore. The American "empire" has been in relative decline. The US GDP as a percentage of world GDP peaked at 40% in 1960. Before the dominance of European Empires due to old world diseases wiping out the Native Americans, and gunpowder and higher population sizes and wealth from the Americas allowing European empires to conquer Africa, for most of history, China and India were the most prosperous civilizations with the largest economies since they have the largest populations. First China will catch up, then India, then Africa.
Ebolalalala double-posted this 1 month ago, 6 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^][v]#1,405,953
The British Empire actually didn’t have a particularly impressive economy. Currently, the United States has 4% of the world population, but we make up 26% of the world’s GDP. During the height of the British Empire, about 24% of the world economy belonged to the British Empire. Except, they had 24% of the world’s population, so they actually weren’t more productive per person than the rest of the world. The British Empire was mostly an extractive empire that looted the resources of India and Africa. They did this because in the past, before economics was a properly established as a field of study, there used to be a belief that a nations power and wealth was directly tired to how much gold and how many resources a nation could extract. But the problem with that is it actually is possible for two parties to both benefit through trade, it’s not possible for both parties to benefit through resource extraction. So the innovation of the United States as an "empire" is actually that we’re not an empire like the British were, we’re supposed to be a free market economy that trades with other nations. For example, the United States has actually benefited a lot from trading with China rather than trying to take over China. It’s actually mutually beneficial. The whole worldview that you have that Africans are inferior and the west should oppress them actually doesn’t advantage the United States. If the United States stopped trading with other nations, we’d end up being 4% of the world economy instead of 26% and we’d lose whatever "empire" we have.
Ebolalalala triple-posted this 1 month ago, 1 minute later, 2 days after the original post[^][v]#1,405,954
And in fact, the rise of the British Empire can’t be attributed to cultural factors, but it can be attributed to geography. Britain is an island, Britain had a naval empire, those two things aren’t coincidences.

If you look into why the south lost the Civil War, it basically comes down to economics. If you enslave blacks, you actually don’t have an incentive to innovate. The north industrialized, the south didn’t, when black people get paid a salary, they can buy things, and when black people are producing, and buying, and selling, that’s mutually beneficial for both black people and white people. So what ended up happening is because the north didn’t have slavery, it became more technologically advanced than the south and they could produce more weapons that were more accurate, the had a higher population, and they were more wealthy. For example, they came up with the idea that if you carve a spiral inside the barrel of a gun, you can make the bullet spin which stabilizes it and makes it more accurate.
