apparently a lot of folks have family legends about having some ancestral link to some tribe of the American continent, but it turns out they were only part black

Tbh there are so many ethnicities in Nigeria, a black American guessing they’re anything more specific than "Yoruba," "Igboc," or "Hausa" is bound to be wrong.

I also don’t really get calling African ethnicities "tribes" though, like if a tribe has 30, 40, or 60 million people is it really even a tribe at that point?

It’s almost like people have been living there for millions of years or something…

Like the Edo people for example, they’re technically a tribe in that, they have a state dedicated to them, before colonization they used to be a nation state, and they still have a traditional monarch that’s the head of that tribe, except their tribe is 10 million people. It’s not really an "ethnicity" in that, it has a structure, and it doesn’t really make sense that an ethnicity would have a king, but it’s not really a "nation" in that it’s not governing, so it is sorta like a tribe I guess, but really big.
