I rendered my world in Alpha 1.0.14, so I don't have any strongholds. I just hacked in some End goop and stuck it in a hole.

Normally that is how you would get to the end. That black goo is what spawns when you active the portal you saw in the stronghold.
OP just spawned the goo and went in just as one would if they spawned a portal piece for the nether.

yeah, i've been through the portal i was just wondering if that stuff was generated in random places like in OPs pic.
i think when notch first showed it in a screenshot it was just in a cave.
