I’ve never been a fan of worshipping or denigrating an entire society. Japan has some things to recommend it, from cleanliness to pride taken in one’s work regardless of role. The whole poison work to death culture and the bizarre sexualities, including widespread asexuality, are perplexing.

I agree with not worshipping or denigrating an entire society, but in the United States it seems like it’s becoming more and more popular to say some countries are shitholes and other countries are the best thing since sliced bread just based on how much money and how many white people said country has. This results in the most stupid simplistic takes on every country in the world to the point where I can’t google anything about Africa’s economy without coming across comments from some Neo Nazis saying Africa is a shithole because Africans are inferior or google anything about Japan without people talking about how clean the streets are or about war crimes that happened 80 years ago.

The takes are also stupid, people have opinions like Africans are just incapable of being civilized and the fact that Africa is poor now is evidence they’ll be poor forever, until you actually look at GDP growth data and see, that their economies are actually getting bigger. Or that Japan is some great economy that will continue to be great forever because Japanese people are so smart, while ignoring completely they’ve had economic stagnation since the 1980s.

People are increasingly simplistic and lack nuance. Some African countries are doing fine. You have former colonies whose infrastructure was tied to export. Local elites and “liberators” frequently seized on this and milked it.
It’s kind of dumb to assume every country needs to or wants to end up as a European-like nation. Or Singapore. Why? And it ignores the permutations in Europe from religious wars to Divine Right kings to enlightened despots to parliamentary democracies.
Of course all of this is over the heads of those who assign good and bad labels. Japan is venerated but they hide problems, don’t question things, and deference to hierarchy perpetuates economic stagnation and a low-birth civil society.
