I want you to imagine that the year was 2020. This story takes place in sub Saharan Africa during the coronavirus pandemic. Imagine in a small African village, two black men who are friends with each other are standing in line at the polls, ready to do their civic duty because they believe that democracy is the way to advance Africa. They aspire for their country to become strong just like the west through western values like democracy and human rights.
When these two men get to the front of the line and open their ballots, one man says to the other, "Hey, I see this ballot has someone by the name of Adolf Hitler on it! Wouldn’t it be funny if we voted for Hitler." Then the other man said, "Haha, this is hilarious! Yes we should vote for Hitler! Hitler will be a strong leader and improve our country! What could go wrong?" And so both black men in this sub Saharan African nation vote for Adolf Hitler during the coronavirus pandemic.
Now I want you to imagine that somehow, everyone in the village also voted for Hitler because they thought it was funny, and Hitler actually won the election. Now I want you to imagine that this person named Adolf Hitler turned out to be a black man.

The world is a big complicated place, and in a big complicated world with a lot of different cultures and a lot of different types of people, some of those people are going to black Africans living in a sub Saharan African country who would vote for a man named Adolf Hitler, and there’s just not much we can do about that.
