Saying "it's known" isn't the same as actually giving a source.

It's a pattern recognition test, how is it biased towards westerns? Use a specific question to show, don't just make vague claims without evidence.

Anonymous B replied with this 3 months ago, 3 minutes later, 58 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #1,398,446

If you actually want to know why, the reason is because whites came up with scientific racism, which isn’t actually science as a way to justify colonialism.

IQ scores are based on percentiles. Your IQ score isn’t a percentage of how many problems you got right on the test, your IQ score is an indicator of how well you performed relative to everyone else.

If you have an IQ score of 70 for example, that means you scored lower than 98% of people. Now the major problem with the statistics a lot of racists cite about how blacks have lower IQs, is they’ll present maps of Africa with countries labeled with low IQ numbers as evidence that Africans are less intelligent than white Europeans, but what they expect you to not understand is the statistics they’re showing are mathematically impossible.

Africa has 1.5 billion people, Earth has 8.2 billion people. That means about 18% of people alive on Earth today are African.

An IQ of 70 corresponds to the 2nd percentile, meaning 98% of people scored higher than you, meaning you’re less intelligent than 98% of people.

An IQ of 80 corresponds to the 10th percentile, meaning 90% of people who took the test scored higher than you.

If Africans are roughly 20% of the world population, it is mathematically impossible for them to score lower than 98% of the population or 90% of the population. Meaning anyone who says Africans have an IQ of 70 or 80 on average is lying to you.

> If that is even true, it's because the IQ test is biased towards Western white people. That's a known fact.

That is true on some level, but the much larger cause is that the statistics actually are not real. The tests are biased but the statistics where you’ll see people post "IQ by country" maps, those statistics are literally not a mathematically possible distribution of IQ scores.

Anonymous C replied with this 3 months ago, 2 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,398,449

Those would be from norming in one country that has a higher average IQ, and then giving it to different country and their IQ score are lower than you would think because it's not normed against the whole world.

Yes, it would be better to norm it against the whole world, but that doesn't change the fact that those countries still scored lower on average than other countries.

It also doesn't change the fact that blacks in America, when tested against IQ tests normed against Americans as a whole, score lower than whites and asians.

Also, you avoided giving a single example of a biased test anywhere in your post, because you are unable to do so.

Like, let me explain to you just how bad the statistics are. Okay?

Africa has 1.5 billion people. If Africans have an IQ of 70, that means 98% of people alive are smarter than Africans. And if 98% of people are smarter than Africans, it follows logically that 100% of people who are smarter than Africans aren’t Africans. So that means that 100% of humanity is the 2% of Africans plus the 98% of people who aren’t Africans who score higher than Africans.

Do you know what the world population would need to be for Africans to be 2% of the population? Earth would have to have 75 billion people.

If the test is normed against the US, not the entire world, then you can get those scores.

Whether it's normed correctly to the population doesn't change whether the scores are higher or lower relatively, it just affects whether you can accurately declare how far a population deviates from the mean.

IQ tests can't tell how much african countries deviate from the mean without global norming, but they can still show who scored better or worse.

> You’re claiming that the data isn’t fake, it’s just rigged.

No, I never said that, that's another strawman. Why are you incapable of responding to what's actually been said?

The data is fine, it's not rigged, but it's not globally normed. If USA has a higher average IQ globally, and the test is normed on that, then getting a 100 (should be average) would mean you need an above-average IQ to get 100.

So 100 isn't actually average without renorming it, but that doesn't change the fact that blacks score lower than whites or asians.

Anonymous B replied with this 3 months ago, 50 seconds later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,398,457

Really, you’re proving OP’s point. OP’s point is that the data is biased towards white people so that white people will score better than black people. You’re saying that the data is normalized to the United States, a wealthy developed country where everyone speaks English. If you normalize the data for the Untied States, the United States will always have an average IQ of 100 no matter who is living there no matter how smart or dumb they are. So then how is it fair to design and normalize a test for one country and one culture and then give it to completely different people in completely different cultures with completely different access to education and then present the result as unbiased?

Clearly it is biased.

60% of people live in Asia, it’s mathematically impossible for a majority of people to score higher than Asians since Asians are the majority of people on earth which makes it mathematically impossible for a globally normalized IQ to say that Asians have an IQ below 100.

Norming 100 to America doesn't give America any advantage, it just sets the relative baseline as an average American.

Under 100 would mean dumber than the average American, over 100 would mean smart than the average American.

That doesn't boost American scores relative to others, and speaking English has nothing to do with it, there are language-neutral tests.

Intelligence tests can be biased toward white culture because they often rely on knowledge and experiences more common to middle-class, white populations. The vocabulary, idioms, and specific content of the questions can give an unfair advantage to test-takers from that cultural background.
Examples of white-biased IQ test questions
The "teacup and saucer" question
A pre-school test showed a picture of a teacup and asked children to identify the object that goes with it. The expected answer was a saucer. However, children from homes where saucers are not used would be at a disadvantage compared to those from households where this specific table setting is common.
Literary and vocabulary questions
Some versions of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) have included questions based on specific literary and vocabulary knowledge. These can be biased against people from different cultural or linguistic backgrounds who may not be as familiar with particular American or European authors and terminology.
Example: A question that asks, "Who wrote Hamlet?" or "What does the word esoteric mean?" depends on having a specific educational background.
Idiomatic expressions
Questions that rely on understanding specific idioms can create bias. Idioms are figurative expressions deeply rooted in a particular language and culture.
Example: A question that asks, "What is meant by the saying: 'kill two birds with one stone'?" assumes familiarity with this specific English idiom.
Analogy questions
Research has shown that questions testing the understanding of sayings and analogies can be biased when they require specific prior knowledge. In one study, white students significantly outperformed Black students on these types of questions.
Example: A question that presents the analogy "Runner:Marathon" and asks for a similar relationship, with options like "oarsman:regatta," can be biased. The correct answer depends on knowing that a regatta is a rowing competition, a concept more likely to be familiar to children from higher socioeconomic backgrounds.
Sources of bias beyond specific questions
The bias in IQ tests is not limited to individual questions but also reflects broader socioeconomic and cultural factors.
Socioeconomic factors: Higher IQ scores correlate with higher socioeconomic status, suggesting that the tests may be measuring exposure to "privileged" information and educational opportunities rather than innate intelligence.
Standardization norms: IQ tests are normed against a "standard" population that is often predominantly white and middle-class. This can disadvantage minority populations, whose life experiences and backgrounds may differ significantly.
Historical context: Early intelligence tests were developed by figures with eugenicist views who designed them to prove the supposed intellectual inferiority of non-white populations. While modern tests have attempted to reduce bias, this history raises concerns about the validity and purpose of standardized testing.
Examiner bias: Studies conducted as early as the 1930s showed that African Americans tested by white examiners scored lower than those tested by Black examiners. This highlights how the testing environment itself can impact scores.

Like, think about this: which race on this planet has the most incentive to portray Africans in a negative light? It’s whites. The Chinese didn’t colonize Africa, they don’t have an incentive to make Africans look stupid, China accepts more African international students than the United States does. The Europeans and the Americans are the ones who enslaved us. So why is it that the Chinese didn’t make up a test to measure intelligence and then report that Africans score lower on it than Chinese people? How come it’s Europeans specifically that created a test to report that the people they systematically oppressed for hundreds of years are inferior biologically in some way?

@1,398,469 (A)
Also to add onto your point: different languages affect the way that people think. For example, in English, every sentence is past, present or future tense, but in Chinese, they don’t conjugate words based on tense. But just because people think about the world in a different way doesn’t mean their way of thinking is inferior, which is why using Europe or America as a baseline standard culture to measure the world against makes no sense.

Language is a complicated thing. For example, English and Chinese both have the same word order but Irish has a different word order than English and Japanese has a different word order than Chinese. It’s not that simple. For example, in Nigeria, a lot of people speak English, but they speak English to communicate between different ethnic groups. People still speak native African languages like Igbo or Yoruba or Hausa in their own local communities.

Anonymous E double-posted this 3 months ago, 1 minute later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #1,398,540

There are differences in how your brain works based on what your native language is. For example, people who speak Chinese natively are more likely to have perfect pitch because they speak a tonal language. If Chinese people gave everybody a test on how well they could hear tones, Nigerians would probably score a lot better than Europeans because west African languages are tonal languages.

In fact, I don’t think you’ve ever been worried about the answer to any question you’ve ever asked. You don’t ask questions because you want to know the answer to a question. You ask a question because you think the absence of an answer proves you right, except it doesn’t, because you only need to be wrong for one reason to be wrong, you don’t need to be wrong for every reason. There are an infinite number of questions you could ask, and no matter how many questions you ask are answered, you will always ask another question. Because the truth is, you don’t believe what you’re saying. You don’t believe that this is the truth, you know it’s not, but you’re emotionally dependent on a certain narrative about the world, and without that narrative, you don’t have a sense of self. And when you lose that sense of self and reflect, you die, and you’re scared to die.
