Then a BMW is great for you. Although a Z4 isn't really luxurious at all. You'd love a BMW 540i/545i/550i. It's a very nice sedan with a surprisingly quick V8 engine. I used to have a 540i and it was quicker than a C4 Corvette and a Cobra Mustang, but you'd never know it by how smooth the ride was.

To answer your questions: Painted calipers aren't dangerous. The M5 is a nice car if you want to spend that kind of money. If you're looking for more of a daily driver I'd get a 540i from the same generation. The engines aren't meant to be as high-strung and so they usually last longer. If you get an E39, though, make sure to have the cooling system serviced at 100k. It's not in the recommended maintenance schedule, but do it anyway. It should cost around $1000-$1500 at a decent independent shop. If there are no records of having the cooling system serviced and it's above 100k, assume it hasn't been serviced and do it propmtly. The reason for this is that each car has some design flaws. And these cars tend to have their design flaws in the cooling system, necessitating some preventive maintenance. The good news is that if you do that preventive maintenance the car's cooling system will be just as reliable as any other car's.
I can't say anything about the Challenger. Totally not my style and surprising to compare to a 5-series BMW. But if you like it I'm definitely not going to hate.

Your advice is a little backward. It's automatic cars that begin to have trouble above that mileage. Clutch packs wearing out in an automatic is much worse than a clutch wearing out on a manual.

Don't forget that you'll need periodic (probably yearly or more) maintenance on a used car. You need to factor in future repairs into the price.
If you spend all your money on the car then you can't afford to drive it for terribly long. Since you'll be a new driver you'll probably rag it out and/or wreck it within 2 years.
Tl;dr get a beater, learn how not to ruin a car by ruining your first car (because you will anyway.) every little kid wants a bad ass car, sure, but all you'll really get it assloads of expenses and frustration.

They are exactly the same car. The M5 is just a version of the E39 chassis, and so is the 540i. Make sure you get a 540i 6-speed though.
And I have to agree with the people saying not to spend a lot of money on a first car. It's supposed to get you around, nothing more, nothing less. An expensive car isn't smart to use to learn how to have a car on, so to say.

Nah, you don't have to get a cheap car like that. Get a reliable gas saver. The Camaro is neither of those. Think along the lines of simple used family car that was owned by the husband of a soccer mom and now he wants to get rid of it cheaply because the next Camry is ready for purchase. It will get you from A to B easily, conveniently, and cheaply. And use your college money for college. If you're so worried about having money and showing it, a college degree is basically a necessity.

yup. Just set a reasonable budget, 5k will get you a nice and reliable car that won't be impossible to afford maintenance on. You can likely find a car that is 3-5 years old that is totally in that range. It'll get you to a job, or to school, and eventually you'll work your way up to that brand new car of whatever make and model you want.
