In my case WE started out dating. Had so many common interests - Was best friends with her brother and dad. Met via Ham Radio and no she had no need for a license because she could pic up a mike and talk to me without assistance.

Dated about 3 years and asked her to marry me. Almost crashed my car on the 405 around Mulholland drive re a gift she gave me re proposal. She said she brought up children while we were dating. Don't remember - a few years into the marriage she said she wanted a child. Was already raising 5 of her sisters during the teen years and that seemed about all I could handle - finally agreed to our own kid and decided to go for a girl which requires not the most fun positions for ...

A few months into trying I said I change my mind - She did not resist my request. Marriage wise we both learned to Mountain Climb and I mean serious climbing and hiking and lots of long backpacks for up to 2 weeks at a time in the High Sierras.
Tons of common interests like wine and food tasting and cooking together and so much fun and vacations. ONLY ONE PROBLEM Which was she was super jealous and could not accept my need for LOTS of Sisters. I never once made a move on any of them but got accused of doing so - So one day on a Solo Climb I made up my mind to commit the crime and said it's about time I had an affair. - More than one over a few years and damn just damn -

Anyway still the marriage was ROCK Solid - She was a Fantastic Bed partner and the more I got outside the marriage the MORE She got. Then and I MEAN THEN She got into an odd religion and decided NO MEAT NO FISH and all of a sudden the back yard B-B-Qs with friends ENDED and invites to other's homes ended for dinners and WE Both started to go in other directions and ONE Day I said I needed all that OTHER Stuff besides Sex and and and - So 16+ years and I hung out for 4 over when I should have ended it - Held on so she could get her Masters degree at UCLA and then I said it's time to say good by. Perhaps the best two years were when we were offered a House and Car and all expenses paid by a US Gov agency as I said yes to TWO Years at MIT. All the Gov agency wanted was for me to take just one single course that lasted two years and then anything else was up to me. She was free to attend any school she wanted and she chose lots of art courses. So two cars leased at US Gov expense - Lots of time to explore all of the East Coast and Canada on US Gov money.

Gots to say I miss her and she is in some kind of Heaven re the odd religion she chose. I tried ONE Service given by a Dennis Weaver who was some kind of TV cowboy - Said never again and ended up years later as that Religion in my Next Door Neighbor in Cardiff by the Sea. Good people REALLY Good people - Just not into eating Meat.

@OP One must look at all the Marriages that FAIL with Children. I had Super Sisters in Law - Just that having them at the worst of Teen years was well IT Was a learning experience. Oh I now am sure I have a 2nd daughter out there is probably does not know I exist.

Damn. Got it. Right partner. I’m obviously trapped in my own bias and local bubble of experience. It feels like a prison and without kids I’d be gone.
