Topic: Do religious professionals know they are full of shit?

Anonymous A started this discussion 4 months ago #129,472

An x professional is a person who gets paid for doing x. So religious professionals get paid to talk about religion. Imagine if someone got paid talking about how plants were conscious and didn’t like being cooked or eaten. Crazy, right? Science cannot answer one question. How was this universe brought into existence. We’ll probably never know. But imagine we knew. People would still be in gods, demons, that sort of thing. Religious professionals rely on the gullibility and hopes of people to pay the bills. Seems kind of sad.

What is dark matter made from, why is there dark energy, why is there more matter than antimatter, etc.

Great questions. We don’t know the answers. But maybe, and just maybe the Koran and the Holy Bible are fictional works.

I think I'd rather hang out with someone who talks about faeires a lot and we'd walk in the woods looking for evidence of faeries, instead of the constant god talk

Religion is the best money maker in history. You sell an invisible product. People buy it out of belief, the allure of a community of believers, or just in case. If the prayer works, you’re in good standing. If it fails, your faith was wanting or it was “part of the plan.” There is a rebuttal book for everything , such as why we no longer have prophets or miracles or direct demonstrations of Almighty power.

Given the history of Israel and the Roman Empire, I don’t think this idea that the Bible is entirely fictional makes much sense.

If Jesus and Muhammad are fictional, you’d have to explain St. Peter and Muhammad’s children.

Being homophobic and frequenting a purple site is an odd choice.

But seriously though, it is really strange racist homophobic white dudes all hang out on a site that looks like it could be a damn LGBTQ+ forum. Who picked the color scheme? This is ridiculous. The only worse colors they could have chosen are hot pink and neon brown.

And it’s 2025, and we’ve got no dark mode? Come on. Hitler hated blacks and even Hitler knew black was the coolest color. That’s why he made all his uniforms black.

Patched together Bronze Age legends still command billions of dollars. Why change a thing? And for those of alternative faiths, they can enjoy being financially and orifice hosed by their guru.

You know you can change the colours and even use your own custom CSS on this site right? We used to have lots of them maintained with dark modes.

Both are true. Plenty of conversion/deconversion stories, people jump in and out all the time after their revelation. Some maintain the grift even after losing faith - see occasional posts on confession sites.

Belief lights up parts of the brain and releases endorphins. Pneumonia gains feelings of superiority and of being in league with some ultimate truth. Conversion can be part of this.

Of course I have some Midwestern family members who readily bounce around churches based on community and business affiliations and for marriage.
