Islamic artwork is a great example of this. A common attribute of all early mosques is that their extensively complex artwork is all guided by 3 elegant equations:at = (a-a0)*cos(theta*pi/180) + (a-a0)*sin(theta*pi/180)
bt = (b-b0)*cos(theta*pi/180) - (b-b0)*sin(theta*pi/180)
g(a,b) = exp(2*pi*i*omega*at*bt)*exp(-(at^2)/(2*sigma1^2) - (bt^2)/(2*sigma2^2))
This is amazing not only artistically but scientifically becuase it proves they had knowledge of harmonic functions, Fast Fourier transformations (FFT), convolution, the Eulerian constant, and even the concept of complex numbers. All of these concepts, historically, have been incorrectly attributed to much later rediscoveries by western counter parts. The original discoveries were lost by things like the Christian Crusades (hah, a "religion of peace")

Your beliefs aside, these concepts wouldn't have been discovered until hundreds of years later without Islam. Islam provided the community, support, encouragement and most importantly the open environment under which these ideas could form and disseminate all throughout the Islamic world... whether through artwork or through the practice and creation of algebra (by the pious Muḥammad ibn MÅ«sÄ al-KhwÄrizmÄ«).

They were discovered by the Arabic cultures and people, maybe. Religious institutions can offer a certain framework for philanthropy, but as a general rule the superficial unity they offer boils down to "us versus the heathens." Even then, divisions will inevitably arise when there are not enough outside threats. I don't really know enough about that period of time to come up with a definitive answer, but I do know that certain areas have been more liberal and progressive than others in a historical sense. Classical Greece did not rise and rediscover/improve on Egyptian engineering techniques and mathematical concepts after Third-Age Egypt collapsed because Egyptian religion was better than Greek religion, and it is still difficult to determine to this day why these events happen. However, I think it is naive to attribute certain progressive ideas to things that just happened to be around during the time.
