Use your ears find a length you want that corresponds with a position of your ear and make each side match up to that. If you have only one ear then I'd suggest a prosthetic ear.

That's ok if you're cutting your own hair the whole, I'm talking more along the line of maintaining angled sideburns, not cutting new ones.
I also find a small hand mirror helps in conjunction with a larger wall mounted bathroom mirror.

Use a thin flexible piece of plastic and cut yourself a face template to help with shaving. Ladies can do the same thing for easy make-up application.
I'm all about doing a little extra work up front to save a lot of time on the back side, especially when it's something you do frequently and indefinitely!

If your face is symmetrical, its a no brainer. Just measure off of the sides of your lips.
