Mostly they just shoot kids. Sometimes older folks just are at the wrong place and the wrong time.

Most kids who are shot in mass shootings are shot by cis men. Because cis men commit the vast majority of all violent crime and especially gun crime
Also, many mass shootings kick off with cis men killing family members or ex partners amd then going on to kill strangers

You're right on the family and partners, but as far as random sprees they usually target kids from what I've read about it.
