In terms of impact on the art of guitar playing, maybe Robert Fripp? In terms of talent and longevity/discography there's a huge glut of people to pick from and idk how you'd pick just one.

Listen, I’m a die hard Pink Floyd fan, yet I understand that Gilmour was severely limited in ability compared to other modern greats. His playing probably had more soul than anyone though.

Hence the need to determine your metrics, as Anon B said. For many people, including myself, "soul" is vastly more important than technical ability or virtuosity.

For me, it's a combination of note choices, phrasing, and serving the music. Gilmour and Knopfler are in a class of their own for this, in my opinion.

I'm biased towards mainstream 2010s and earlier extreme metal so my choice would be something like Paul Gilbert, John Petrucci, Jeff Loomis, etc. I have a soft spot for Marty Friedman as well but he's not on their level of technical ability (absolutely no disrespect to him). Current guitarists I like are Tim Henson, Felix Martin, Fraser Edwards/Ascension and Syncatto but none are the best alive.

You piece of shit! Dave is the best guitarist on this board and if you defame him again I will kill your family!

You're so very biased towards rock and metal. You need more bluegrass in your life, friend. Listen to the album Manzanita by Tony Rice.
